Is it just me or can't this actor act for shit?

The show kind of suggests that AJ is supposed to be a loser, but this performance transcends that.

His dumbass expressions always irk me out. And then a biographical fact about the actor is that he was arrested for robbery in 2001 (season 2-3 of the show was airing) back when he was a teenage actor appearing on the biggest show at the time, which for me suggests that he's genuinely slow.
>>
>>222342339
Seems fine to me.
Is there any scene specifically in which you feel that he didn't portray his character correctly?
>>
>>222342563
Nah, not really, I'm just kind of disappointed with the show itself. His performance is fine, but maybe it's underwhelming in comparison to the other cast. Don't get me wrong about the show, it's good. But Breaking Bad for example, blows it out of the water. I always rooted for Walt when I was watching, but as for Sopranos I find every male character repulsive and a piece of shit, yet it's a clear intention of the creators to make the audience romanticize these degenerates.
>>
>>222342782
>yet it's a clear intention of the creators to make the audience romanticize these degenerates.
Depiction ≠ glorification or romanticization
>>
>>222342803
I don't like the show all that much, man. It's not bad, it's just that it took me 2 weeks to binge-watch BB (and BCS years later) and now it's been 4 I've been watching Sopranos and I'm still on season 2.
>>
>>222342782
>yet it's a clear intention of the creators to make the audience romanticize these degenerates.
Criminally low media literacy skills.
>>222342339
He gets better over the course of the show.
>>
He's a weaker actor, but also figure he was just cast for sort of resembling Gandolfini when he was like, 12. Chase's long term plans for the series got scuttled after Nancy Marchand died, he might not have really intended for AJ to be a major character
>>
>>222343082
maybe the bar's set too high because of him
i watched the new series with his actual son and uh, wow it would've been better if they didn't make saints
>>
>>222342950
>Criminally low media literacy skills.
Whatever, dude. You're actually low iq yourself, your mother told me after giving me a blowjob in Paris where she was working a bon bon concession.

What I meant to say that the show is highly praised, which for sure makes the creators feels accomplished and happy. But for what? That scene where 2 black guys try to murder Tony? That action sequence is literally the worst in cinema history. Anything in old Star Wars seems like top-tier cinematography compared to that.

And it's just one example, everything about this show and its inconsistency piss me off. But afterall, it's decent, but very faulty nevertheless.
>>
>>222342563
"Correctly" and "well" are two different things bubba.
>>
>>222342803
That's where you're wrong. Showing bad people doing bad things and making them the heroes of the story is glorification.
>>
>>222343528
They're all consistently portrayed as pathetic and most of them end up dead or in prison due to the type of senseless violence they themselves dish out.
>>
>>222343528
Protagonist ≠ hero
>>
>>222343126
You sound like an autistic freak who shouldn't engage with anything beyond Sonic the Hedgehog
>>
>people who don't get how funny AJ is
I swear Sopranos has one of the dumbest fanbases.
There's people who get that the show is pretty much primarily a comedy, and then there's people who treat it like it's some GTA thug life fantasy, and get mad at every character who isn't "cool". As if that isn't the point.
>>
>>222342339
He was fine in the role. Not especially great but not terrible either.
I skip all of the scenes with the kids during my rewatches anyways.
>>
>>222343594
Stop projecting
>>
>>222343082
He's weak and just has a really unlikeable face and quality to him. He's punchable and pathetic. I think another actor would've been much better at the role but we got stuck with this guy. I usually skip his parts unless its Tony berating him.
>>
>>222343873
That's like complaining that Walt Jr was a pathetic cripple instead of a suave Chad. The fact the son is a loser is an important part of the protagonists characterization.
>>
>>222343126
No wonder you liked Breaking Bad, aka live action anime for millennials
>>
>>222344278
>No wonder you liked Breaking Bad, aka live action anime for millennials
happens to be the highest rated show on IMDB AND RottenTomatoes for some reason

I bet you didn't like it, because... Ugh...
>>
>>222342339
>The show kind of suggests that AJ is supposed to be a loser, but this performance transcends that
I think that AJ is more of a rich kid which got no proper parenting.
I know couple of people like that, they know nothing, despite attending universities more prestigious than mine they got no skills from their time there, and are degenerates whose only form of enternainment is booze, drugs and hookers.
>>
>>222342782
>it's a clear intention of the creators to make the audience romanticize these degenerates
I feel like it’s the exact opposite.
>>
>>222343528
I'm OP and this is what I'm saying basically.
>>
>>222344827
You probably feel like that because you are entirely right. OP is completely retarded if he thinks that any part of this show is meant to glorify the characters in it. The whole point is that they are all miserable people who kill each other over petty shit all the time.
>>
>>222345359
Brown retards love enjoying mob media on a shallow level. It's why they're so obsessed with Scarface.
>>
>>222342339
He's a shit actor but perfect for the role. I believe he's a retarded kid. Same for the Jackie Jr actor, and the guys that played Matt and Sean.
>>
>>222342782
>Breaking bad blows it out of the water
Lol no. The Sopranos is the literal greatest show of all time and it's not debatable.
>>
>>222345442
Why do you feel like that? Were you placed in special ed?
>>
>>222345442
>>222345801
I think Sopranos is just much more entertaining than breaking bad. Breaking bad has some high points but it has a lot of low points where it's just a boring slog, Sopranos is constantly fun.
>>
>>222342339
>A violent mafioso's kid turns out to be a dense meathead in real life

Whoa, anon. Youre about to blow this case wide open.
>>
>>222342782
Lol bait of the year over here
>>
>>222342339
>The show kind of suggests that AJ is supposed to be a loser, but this performance transcends that.
his performance is perfect.
>>
>>222345938
I guess it comes down to taste. But I still can't wrap my head around it. I believe myself to have a superior opinion, objectively correct basically. And yeah, there actual gags in Sopranos, which Breaking Bad is missing, but still.
>>
>>222346013
Tbf by the end of the show AJ shows more introspection and self-awareness than anyone else in his family.
>>
>>222342339
in a way his bad acting only makes the AJ character more real and disappointing to Tony in universe.
>>
>>222344585
yes the indisputable consensus of middle aged housewives and bob from sales on matters of fine art.
>I bet you didn't like it, because... Ugh...
because it's live action anime for millennials, did you miss that part? I bet you loved when Walter did the epic thing, and then said the epic one liner, and became an epic drug lord, but still didn't fuck one whore because he's le good man, except when the writers decided you can't think that and then he becomes literally the joker, and even then doesn't fuck one whore because he has to be the most shallow safe evil anime protagonist
>>
>>222346071
Doesn't stop him from getting whacked, though
>>
>>222346042
Breaking bad is much more serious and I usually prefer serious to silly, but Sopranos almost never crosses fully into the silly, and breaking bad is just constantly dour, it just gets old after a while for me.
>>
>>222346159
What do you think of BCS?
>>
>>222346194
NTA but I can't imagine watching it on seasonal basis

My fav episode is chicanery
>>
>>222342339
you just revealed your own ignorance
>>
>>222342339
He was believable as a fat retard in the early seasons
>>
>>222342782
Retard alert
>>
>>222342339
It sounds like his acting was perfect because it had the intended effect on you the viewer.
>>
>>222342782
Retard or bait, call it.
>>
>>222343528
>main character= hero and paragon of humanity
Tony Soprano is just the main character of the show "The Sopranos". Being a main character is in no way an assertion that he is a good person you're required to like.
>>
>>222344585
High rating just means people liked it. In my eyes, Breaking Bad is like The Wolf of Wall Street. It's fun, and it's hard to hate it because it's fun, but you're not supposed to take it seriously as some absolutely dramatic masterpiece. It's a fun show so if you ask me the binary "is it good or bad", I'm going to say good. Leaning into being fun means more people are going to enjoy it. And this isn to shit on it. It's just dumb to compare the two because they're so wildly different.
>>
>>222342339
Robert Iler has never seen an episode of The Sopranos and never intends on ever watching.
>>
>>222347196
>>222346888

Are you Italian AND retarded? What's wrong, buddy?
>>
>>222342339
>His dumbass expressions always irk me out. And then a biographical fact about the actor is that he was arrested for robbery in 2001 (season 2-3 of the show was airing) back when he was a teenage actor appearing on the biggest show at the time, which for me suggests that he's genuinely slow.
Sounds like a little Tony
>>
>>222347572
>yet it's a clear intention of the creators to make the audience romanticize these degenerates
Retard it is, then. In what way is anyone in the Soprano crew romanticized? They're all shown to be absolute degenerate retard murderers. They're criminals that destroy lives. They're all dumb as hell fat slobs that couldn't make it doing anything else in life besides this. The show takes every measure to remind you of this every episode.
>>
>>222342339
David Chase loves AJ's actor. I think he was more impressed by him than anyone else.
>>
>>222347781
You're nitpicking, moron. Your description of the characters is why the show lowkey sucks. It's disgusting to watch at times. Just violence without substance. Point's been made that it's not one of the best shows out there, although it is good. Stop using internet since you're room temp iq and emotional.
>>
>>222347880
>violence without substance
There are little to no instances of gratuitous violence. If you simply don't find the characters interesting, that's fine. You simply don't like the show and that's ok. But to make some objective argument that it's bad because the characters are bad people is just stupid.
>>
>>222348146
Pfft. What about Christopher shooting the pastry store clerk in the foot just because he didn't serve him first.

>You simply don't like the show and that's ok. But to make some objective argument that it's bad because the characters are bad people is just stupid.

Didn't say the show is bad, look again. Quite the contrary actually.
>>
>>222345938
Sopranos is basically a classic novel in the vein of something like Tolstoy's War and Peace in terms of its scope and ambition while Breaking Bad is basically a really entertaining airport thriller.

Childhood is thinking Breaking Bad is better than the Sopranos in any way shape or form.

You'd have a better argument with something like Mad Men or Game of Thrones when it was good. Breaking Bad isn't even in the conversation imo and enjoyed the series so I'm not a hater. However, saying Breaking Bad is better than the Sopranos is a normie-ass take.
>>
>>222348301
Have you never seen Goodfellas?
That's a clear reference to when Christopher's actor gets shot in the foot in that film. They reversed it. It's a gag and a callback.
>>
>>222348876
NTA but that shit is even worse. It cheapens the setting when people can shoot others in public as a throwaway gag just for the writers to jerk themselves off and suck off scorcese for brownie points. That's the opposite of substance.
>>
>>222348876
Like they do with Phil looking down into the trunk at Angelo
>>
>>222348937
the whole show is communicating with the pop culture perception of the italian mob in america you retard. It's meant to be watched and understood as an american in early 2000s america who is aware of that culture and place. 905 of the shit is an inversion of The Godfather. You unironically lack media literacy if you expect works of art to be realistic simulations of facts.
"it cheapens the setting" go play skyrim you dork

One of the two protagonists there is an actor at least as bad as AJ
>>
>>222348876
Yes, of course I've seen Goodfellas and it's elite-tier, just like BB, whereas Sopranos is only good-tier

>>222349020
>>222348802

Just because Sopranos is more ambitious, doesn't mean it's superior.
>>
>>222349775
It's more ambitious and it completely succeeds , maybe if it fell flat on its face, you could make that argument but it sticks the landing.
