What was the 2000s version of the 80's/90's Action Hero?
Statham. About 30% of his movies are actually a solid 7. I noticed for movies with sequels, the first one is great, but his sequels literally drop to 4/10 or lower. Like The Mechanic.
>>222342949I really liked the original Mechanic, the Charles Bronson. The opening with no dialogue besides background conversations as he plans and carries out a hit is one of my favorite openings.

>>222342898To understand the 2000's Action hero, you need to understand the 90's in general. The Cold War was over and there weren’t any major wars the US was involved in. While violent conflicts were happening in the former Eastern Bloc, Africa, and Southeast Asia, most people didn’t really know or care about those areas back then. Even violent crime in the was at a historic low. It was the "end of history" and many people genuinely believed that everyone would have safe office jobs and live boring, secure lives. The whole postmodern and edgy attitude was a reaction against that perceived boredom. But at its core, it was still an unrealistic fantasy. Then came 9/11 and GWOT and suddenly people had to face reality. The recession was another wake up call, turns out you might not even get a boring, safe job or a nice home. And thanks to the available War footage, people started seeing what Guns and Soldiers really looked like, they weren't built like Schwarzenegger and they didn’t carry around giant bazookas everywhere. So, the 2000s action hero reflected the trend of the time, pretty much every action hero was a soldier with a fitter body type than a bodybuilder with guys like Keanu, Will Smith and Tom Cruise.
