The director saying it's not a monkeys paw really hurt the logic of the movie because it was a really convoluted way of granting the wish. Even if the wish required creating an inhuman entity because it's impossible for normal humans to love that much, it doesn't make much sense why both Nikkis are active and slowly drive each other insane.
