The idea of everybody being infected totally borks the setting. If you sleep in the same room with somebody they could have a heart attack in the middle of the night and then tear your throat out, if you're roofing a building your coworker could slip and fall and then tear your throat out, etc.; it makes any longer-term settlements impractical in ways that could be mitigated but only in retarded-looking ways (like everybody having seatbelts on their beds).
