This was the superior show probably. But admittedly I've not seen all of the older one. They're apples and oranges anyway. Anything Garry did was good. Except for What Planet Are You From. That wasn't as good as I'd hoped it'd be. Then learning the truth of what happened from that Zen Diaries documentary was super sad.

>>222366004Mike Nichols directed it and was appalled at the dailies after the first day of shooting and said he couldn't work with Garry and his insecurities about everything and Garry overheard him and saw his reaction to everything and it kind of destroyed him and the whole shoot was miserable for Mike and Garry both. It's worth a watch. Judd Apatow made it. He was a writer/director on Larry Sanders early in his career.
Apatow made Zen Diaries I mean. Nichols stayed on to finish the movie and didn't Alan Smithee it.
