Watching this show in 2026 feels like you’re being circumcised while watching it, I can’t imagine how much of a mindfuck it was seeing this shit in the 80s
>>
Who was saying that though

Me *laugh track* I like to post on 4chan and say things about jewish people even though it may not be popular on there *laugh track* But I posted a thread and hopefully I get some great responses to it, we’ll see

This was the superior show probably. But admittedly I've not seen all of the older one. They're apples and oranges anyway. Anything Garry did was good.
Except for What Planet Are You From. That wasn't as good as I'd hoped it'd be.
Then learning the truth of what happened from that Zen Diaries documentary was super sad.
>>
Why the fuck would you watch it?
>>
>>222362887
Where can I see it? It should be on Showtime On Demand but it fucking isn't. I hate that they're so selective about which of their original series they're going to have available to stream. I had to buy Dream On and 1st and TEN on DVD to see them.

Larry Sanders was excellent. This has a good rep. It's not like they're making any new television, why wouldn't you check it out?

I only know the Butthole Surfers were real from these posts.
>>
>>222364602
They were around for years and I'd see old stuff in record stores. It was a name you didn't forget. The only time I think they charted was when they did a song that was exactly like Beck's 'Loser'. So it was like this weird, not good, underground band was finally on MTV after 20 years of just having cult fans.

That naysayer was replying to OP I think, but Larry Sanders is probably more user friendly especially considering how young that idiot must be. I find it's harder to relate to stuff, comedy especially, the further it is from your own lifetime. I was too young in the 80s but I remember the tail end of Larry Sanders from my teenage years.
They say without Larry Sanders Show there'd have been no Sopranos and the whole "Golden Age of Television" thing.
Garry started it all.

Mike Nichols directed it and was appalled at the dailies after the first day of shooting and said he couldn't work with Garry and his insecurities about everything and Garry overheard him and saw his reaction to everything and it kind of destroyed him and the whole shoot was miserable for Mike and Garry both.
It's worth a watch. Judd Apatow made it. He was a writer/director on Larry Sanders early in his career.
>>
Apatow made Zen Diaries I mean. Nichols stayed on to finish the movie and didn't Alan Smithee it.
>>
>>222362887
I only remember him as a tiny side character in some superhero flick. Was extremely bogged at that point.
>>
>>222366339
Yeah, that face stretching he had done was very unfortunate.

He was always ugly or was he considered hot at some point? I truly don't get it. Why do that?
>>
>>222366580
Vanity. Trying to look younger. He wasn't unpleasant to look at when he was younger I guess >>222364824 but aging naturally is always the way to go. That face work rarely looks good.
>>
>>222362887
I tried to watch this but I could only find the first episode and one other one for some reason.
>>
>>222366549

I still use the phrase "emotional cum shot" because of this character, lol. The Larry Sanders show was truly probably the best television show I've ever watched.
>>
>>222366667
>rarely
Or are you just biased by the fact that bad work is very obvious while good work is nearly undetectable?
>>
>>222362887
Please elaborate.
>>
>>222366966
When has it ever looked good? Even when it doesn't necessarily look bad it looks unnatural and wrong. It's never undetectable and it's always a bad idea.
>>
It's weird this was airing at the same time as a lot of those stuffy 80s sitcoms. This still feels fresh.
>>
>>222364082
He was also in Zoolander
>>
>>222368064
>When has it ever looked good?
On all the young looking old stars you aren't calling out, people like Sofia Loren and Paul Rudd.
>>
>>222368204
If they had work done it doesn't look good.
>>
>>222368260
So where did Paul Rudd have word done that doesn't look good?
>>
>>222368337
Who said he did? If he did he'll look unnatural. I'm not going to keep arguing with you about it. I don't approve of cosmetic surgery. And you can't "prove" me wrong.

Hearing what Shandling did to that white actress who played the secretary of assistant on The Larry Summers Show killed it forever for me. Just retroactively knowing the actors were all dual citizens probably attended the same summer camp together, hot blonde on the set. Groom, treat her like shit and gaslight for years. Everything except creepy masks except theirs are creepier in certain off light.

Hans Zimmerman

>>222363766
Is that the Jude Apatow documentary? I will never watch it. Really wish another director, not fucking Sodaberg either, did it. Similar reason why never watching that Brian De Palma documentary. Maybe Tarantino will do documentaries after he's done and divorces (carefully offs) his Mossad gash. Shandling's neurotic turtling and Bog surgeries reminded me of The Deer Hunter director's.

>They say without Larry Sanders Show there'd have been no Sopranos
Supposedly Shandling was busted phone tapping the producer of Sopranos and he was blacklisted. Iirc it was related to the same P.I. hired by the guy who did Die Hard, that guy went to prison for years due to it.

To be fair to Garry, Michael Cimino came out of his surgeries looking like a ladyboy who ran a sweatshop in thailand.
>>
>>222368107
That's how HBO felt in general. And why people paid a premium for it. HBO was like if laser disc aesthetic was applied to content itself. But it was incredibly subversive of all things "American white goyim" in retrospect.
>>
>>222364048
zoomies dont know how to torrent, unc
>>
>>222370551
What was Cimino into? He was a drug trafficker? That's the face Garry wanted but couldn't sputter out, so much genetic insecurity. Genius is tragic.

Is it true the iconic Joker surgery in Batman 1989 was an inside jest about Garry's? Sent Garry right over the cuckoo's nest
>>

Joker '89?
>>
>>222369987
You mean the girl he dated for 7 years, convinced to pose for playboy and then fired/broke up with right after she did?
Was there more to that?
>>
>>222370483
It was the other way around. Shandling's phone was tapped by the same PI that tapped a bunch of other peoples' phones.
>>
>>222366311
The Zenne Frank Diaries? Won a Oscar. This was before they supervised how much of the complimentary screeners were viewed by us members in order to vote. There are ways around the new system or so a little mouse tells me. That you Ari? How's Shira?
>>
>>222370920
Was there more to it? What are you my wife?
>>
>>222370951
The producer's name was Brad Grey. Shandling said Grey blotted out his name in the industry. Grey later had an unrelated suspicious death, an update of the ol' Jack Ruby special, that was memoryholed quick.
>>
>>222371079
>Grey later had an unrelated suspicious death,
it was lung cancer, fourth stage, hardly suspicious
>>
>>222371079
Shandling sued Grey for 100M in the late 90s. A quick google search shows it was a pulmonary embolism (blood clot that travelled from his leg to his lungs).
>>222371011
I dunno, I'm curious about rumors, but "Dated for 7 years and then broke up with her and fired her from his show" isn't that egregious as these things go.
>>
>>222370920
Yes, she had great tits.
>>
>>222364824
Larry sanders was 100% the original unique filmed sitcom. Paved way for curb, office, TPB, arrested development, all the sitcoms that aren't that regular cheap set shit.
>>
>>222371199
Coincidentally it is also the only late night talk show that isn't completely boring to watch.
>>
>>222366580
No he was never considered hot but he was wealthy and funny so that carried him to bedding hot women
>>
>>222370366
I didnt know apatow made it when I watched and I thought is was a great emotional journey through his life. If you already know his story its probably not that interesting but I didnt
>>
>>222371375
Same here. Watched all of the Larry Sanders show after, great stuff.
>>
>>222363766
>Except for What Planet Are You From. That wasn't as good as I'd hoped it'd be.
it was the type of thing that needed leading man energy or someone with a knack for physical comedy, neither of which was Garry's strong suit. seeing his ugly ass as the co-lead in a romantic comedy was just weird, it felt like the movie was written for Billy Crystal
