In this video, *Mike* and *Rich Evans* from *RedLetterMedia* discuss the current state and future of the *Star Trek* franchise while wearing screen-used *Klingon* costumes from *Star Trek: Discovery* (0:04-1:10). The hosts express their skepticism about recent *Star Trek* productions, noting that many series like *Discovery* have concluded and that *Strange New Worlds* is nearing its end (1:43-2:24).

**Key discussion points:**
* **Franchise Fatigue:** The hosts feel that *Star Trek* has been overproduced in recent years, leading to a decline in quality and a disconnection from the core appeal of the classic series (4:57-5:06, 16:27-16:53).
* **The New Movie:** They discuss the news that *Jonathan Goldstein* and *John Francis Daly* (known for *Game Night* and *Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves*) are writing a new *Star Trek* movie set in the distant future with no legacy characters (5:15-6:29). *Mike* and *Rich* remain skeptical about the project's viability (6:31-7:35).
* **Proposed Direction:** Both hosts agree that if they were in charge, they would pivot to a lower-budget approach, focusing on smaller-scale science fiction stories, rational characters solving problems, and a return to the episodic format that characterized *The Next Generation* (9:26-14:11).
* **Production Strategy:** They argue for a "clean slate," advocating for tighter writing, fewer "universe-ending" stakes, and a shift away from the overly produced, multi-year gaps between short seasons (14:32-15:42, 20:41-21:20).

**Coming up later in the video:**
Following a chaotic lunch break where they struggle to eat in their bulky *Klingon* costumes (22:37-28:04), the hosts plan to further flesh out their vision for a "better" *Star Trek* series in a second part (23:14-23:32, 28:00-28:30).

Rich's $100,000 bond has rocked RLM and divided Mike and Jay. His upcoming court appearance for running over homeless people in Michigan is quickly approaching and is contributing to the inner conflict. Mike made the decision to take the bond payment out of Jay's income and is effectively garnishing his wages, yet Rich continues to get paid in full. This is the reason Jay hasn't been seen in any videos for months now, and may depart from the company altogether.

They worked off unused scripts, and their goal was to complete the 5 year (season) mission.
I don't know what it was seen as on release, but I liked it. Some of it was weaker and clearly kid oriented, but getting most of the cast back for voices was fun. And I'm sure it helped bolster the popularity that the reruns of tos were finding in syndication. Conventions popping up and all.

I just abuse my ability for compartmentalization and consider everything after ENT to be non canon. The JJ Abrams movies are easy to shove into "alternate reality" and the only way to save the franchise is to do the same thing with the last whatever decade+ of TV shows.
Or just say they're all the mad ramblings of a black science fiction writer in the 1960s.

I gotta say, building miniatures and having minimalistic shots of space travel and simple TNG era space fights (warning shot, not constant pew pew pew) DOES seem a lot cheaper and if the show is character/plot/story driven and not action driven, it seems fair to assume that actually going back to the roots of Trek and do a 24th century not-Enterprise ship flying the other side of the Alpha Quadrant and doing their own thing, should work. It wouldn't cost 1mil per episode. It can be extremely budget friendly... So WHAT the fuck is stopping them (Paramount) from making it?

They're desperate for young fans to infuse new blood into the franchise. And they also think young people are all ADHD and need constant visual stimulation or they won't watch. I've said it countless times. Focus on the audience you have. Even if that audience is middle-aged white dudes from the midwest.

its just a meme anon, most of the cost is in things like CGI, actor and executive pay. The CGI budget for these shows is extremely large since there's basically CGI in every scene. With shows like TNG most of the CGI is used very sparingly. In a modern production, even if you make the show look basically the same someone would go over every frame and do things like alter the face of stunt men, remove all the black paper on shiny surfaces to hide reflections and so on with CGI and it would cost a fortune.
>>
>>222373669
Yeah I wish we could get another DS9 style "Geopolitics and diplomacy in space" show but the audience would be way skewed toward white men. I bet even with all the women and rainbow pandering, NuTrek's audience still skewed heavily male. All the quirk chungus Tumblrinas had too many other shows fighting for their attention.

Here is what these old niggas don't understand. TNG/DS9/VOY were made the way they were because that was the style of television at the time. It was not a deliberate choice. They didn't sit around and think "oh we need to make sure we have 26 episodes and a low budget and focus on story and 4x3 aspect ratio." Nutrek is the same way. They're simply making a show in the style of 2020s television.
>>
>>222373659
I'd be fine with people lapping it up if it stayed in its lane and didn't pretend it was anything more than a silly non-canon cartoon. It's the fact that you hear people say that it and/or PIC S3 are the true successors to TNG that's so infuriating.

Absolutely. They chased away most guys at this point but whatever audience still remains skews heavily male. Using a franchise like Star Trek to lure in women is utterly retarded. Completely unserious and silly nonsense. How whoever persons brought this up and weren't immediately fired and laughed out of the room is beyond me.

Why don't they make episodic cheap TV shows anymore? I was just thinking about how we used to get 20+ episodes a year and now you wait five years for 6 to 8 mediocre episodes. Most shows on streaming fail so there's no reason not to try a cheaper method to make shows. Binge culture also ruined TV killing weekly discussion and speculation. It's like they still want it between seasons but at that point no one cares to talk about the show when it'll be gone for so long. Making a cheap quality show that runs weekly seems like it'll be a slam dunk but no studio has attempted to make that yet

The whole streaming industry runs on Underpants Gnome logic. Nobody knows how any of this shit is supposed to money. Netflix is the only streamer that’s profitable only because they’ve been in the game the longest. And they excel at making content just watchable enough to leave the TV on in the background. The thing is we’re never going back to 20 episode seasons because the ship has sailed.
>>
>>222376053
It's too late for that.
Right now the visual style of the franchise is too yassified for them to roll it back.

Perhaps the reason nobody's calling Jack a Marty Stu is simply that nobody gives enough of a fuck about him to think about it?

Put simply, laziness. I'm not even joking/being an edgy boi. Writers enjoy being able to spend years jerking each other off about how clever they are rather than having to actually *be* clever enough to churn out loads of scripts that make good use of a limited budget to tell enough engaging stories to fill a whole season of TV every year. Showrunners and directors love working with a "prestige television" format that lets them pretend they're going to be breaking into movies aaaany day now...any day. Actors also prefer the "prestige" format since it both allows movie stars with an ailing career to pretend they haven't fallen so far and to-the-marrow television actors pretend they're on the way to real stardom, and also allows all of them to do less work for the same money - the jobbing TV actors with a realistic appraisal of their own prospects can do 2 or 3 gigs a year in the same time they used to do one and get very nearly 2-3 times as much money as well, while the poncy movie actors can slum it on streaming to get some money in and still have plenty of time to do self-indulgent indie flicks or runs on stage shows. The money men love it because streaming as a business doesn't actually work like television, the "audience" are investors and banks and private equity firms, the performance isn't the shows but continuing to bamboozle the aforementioned for long enough to retire or golden parachute out to another sector, or for the company to get bought out/merge with another so they can start the whole performance over again.

Episodic television, meanwhile, is only good for one group - audiences - who might as well not even exist in a world where an autoplaying 20 second preview clip on the frontpage of Amazon counts as a "view" for their metrics and Paramount-CBS can use shills and bots to astroturf a perception of social media buzz for a turd like Star Trek Academy that stank so bad even they couldn't justify renewing it.

I've grown to hate Hollywood with a passion but I can still acknowledge just how much they've bend over backwards the past 10 years especially, with insane amounts of money, major creative changes and efforts before and behind the camera all to accommodate women. The truth is Star Trek should absolutely be popping off with women and girls right now. They should have been expanding with theatrical Star Trek movies for women at this point even. And the renewal of Kurtzman's contract shouldn't even be a question but a foregone conclusion due to the sheer success with the female audience. Why isn't any of this a reality?

Theyre not making the kind of shows with star trek that women even like. Which is shows like orange is the new black, house, greys anatomy, weeds.

>So WHAT the fuck is stopping them (Paramount) from making it?
It used to be demographics, because they need strong 18-35 numbers to get juicy ad money. I feel like this is still a core part of their considerations even if it makes little to no sense when everything they have is on streaming.
Maybe the boomer CEOs dream about licensing the IP out and somehow getting mass viewerships on standard TV? (That itself is basically dead).

The only real metric for streaming is watch hours and new subs. They try to capture some "buzz" metric as well (how much impact the shows have online) but the metrics for that is just guessing (given the sea of bot traffic identifying what's actually being talked about and where is hard).
Watch hours they at least can capture good stats on for themselves. Trouble there is there's no objective reporting, just numbers (made up or not) companies want to brag about. So how do you compare successes outside your own kiddy pool? You don't.
New subs you can kinda sorta track if they jump on to watch a new season of something, then you have to decide if they stay on as punters or are just in it to binge a show a month and ditch.

All of which is to say, I don't think they're even interested in the prospect of a low budget sci fi show with a small but regular viewership of opinionated old farts. Even saying that out loud it sounds like something that should be a fan funded Youtube project or something.

Serving aboard a space vessel isn't a female fantasy. They don't give a shit about that kind of thing. I think it low-key causes them a sense of anxiety. The last place a woman wants to be is way out in some desolate location, away from civilization. That's why they love Harry Potter. It's set in a school.

Triple H is the Alex Kurtzman of wrestling.
>>
>>222382885
He has a certain sex appeal.
>>
>>222382955
I don't even like HHH and this is still too mean
>>
>>222383510
In all honesty, Kurtzman is probably a nice person to be around. The same can't be said about someone like Haitch who has set the industry of wrestling back by decades.

Yippee! My imaginary friend Jack Quaid was mentioned!

Anon. The leftists have always known Israel was shit. Some progressive liberals came around to it. Later during the genocide more started to condemn them. The annoying ones are the liberal zionists and always have been.

I chose my words carefully. This chart says it plain enough. They asked only registered Democrats who like Israel.
Not leftists.
>>
>>222384032
They only care when Israel is in the news for killing Arabs. They love to throw around the word antisemite when it's convenient. A shit ton of pro-Israeli jews are leftist
>>
>>222384032
It wasn't like this until Vietnam and the Six-Day War. The Democrats were indeed pro-Israel with guys like LBJ being total cuck sellouts. After Vietnam and SDW, that's when you had Jewish Democrats who had their minds broken as a result of the Democrats' foreign policy; this is the catalyst for the Neoconservative movement that led America into the arms of Israel as the century progressed, culminating in Saddam getting toppled and the ME falling apart overnight.

And the majority of American Jews are against Zionism. The Wealthiest (and most amoral) are pro-Israel. But then there are the zionist Christians.

Leftists are socialists, communist and anarchists. They're counted in that chart as "independents" if they're counted at all.

Mike Stoklasa was the one who shilled JJ Abrams Star TrekZ

He’s the one responsible for the current state of Star Trek.

He’s also the one who demanded Star Trek be more gay.
>>
>>222384860
>He’s also the one who demanded Star Trek be more gay.
sadly its not gay enough
what the franchise desperately needs is a long running villain plotline about gay aliens who try to infect everyone with space aids
>>
I don't know how Mike made it to episode ten of Lower Decks.
