Athens was burned to the ground twice and it took them threatening Sparta that they'd ally with Persia to finally get those red caped bums in the field. Even then, the real victory was won by the Athenian Themistocles in the sea battle.

Not sure what you mean about Persia funding Sparta to screw over Athens though.
