>It's another "Empire commander acts like a fucking retard and gives Yang another easy victory yet the show keeps pretending the empire is full of geniuses" episode
>>
>>222482541
You imbecile, the Empire is filled with morons and only a few are shown to be worth anything, namely only a few of Reinhard's men and also Merkatz. Most of Reinhard's men aren't even shown to be particularly smart, only useful. Also every single alliance commander other than my boy Dusty is a moron.
>>
>>222482706
Yang in particular was a moron, he should have been taking all of Schonkopf's advise. PROVE ME WRONG
>>
>>222482541

>>
>>
>>222482541
These threads got me to watch the anime. I end up skipping through half the episodes and fervently watching the other half. Its really a mixed bag of "Who fucking cares" and "Total Kino: In SPACcccEeeeEEE!!!!"
I wish there was more violence though
>>
>>222482541
Only Reuenthal, Mittermeyer, and maybe Kircheis were on Yang's level. Everyone else was good enough, especially when the Alliance leadership pulled retarded plans like the invasion and got all their good officers killed, and what good officers left after that were killed in the civil war.
>>
>>222484784
Nobody is on Yang's level. He's the Kongming (novel ver.) of the story, he's an unstoppable rapetrain and everyone else is just waiting for him to die so his shitty protege can fail miserably and undo everything he accomplished in the span of weeks
>>
>>222482541
Yang is one of my favourite characters in fiction. Reinhard is okay but Yang carries the show
>>
>>222482541
It's really pathetic how in every anime, the 13 year old lead characters are always 100 times smarter than the adults who have decades of experience.

ya i never really liked or understood his plot, the writing in the first couple episodes is honestly really bad
>phezzan or whatever it's called somehow controls everything despite being very unimportant and defenceless later
>yang's legitimate best friend dies and yang is just like "sheesh he was a good officer but wasted under bad leadership... really shows how dumb our leadership is" and doesn't even react or care
>Reinhard asking all his admirals what the status of the battle is and they're all like "we're losing" and he says "haha actually no we're winning"
but it does get a lot better
>>
>>222485203
Its not about them being smarter, its about the evolution of warfare. WW1 was full of generals who were using old timey tactics and refusing to change leading to excess deaths in the tunes of millions.
>the plan calls for an orderly tactical retreat
>RETREST? NEVER! WE FIGHT TO THE LAST!!!
and they fuck up the entire plan because the point was drawing the enemy in and over extending them by having them chase you. I think that was the entire basis of the Hindenburg Line, unless im thinking of a different thing. You have overlapping layers of defense and the farther back you go, the more intense the fortification and defensive equipment. The entire point was to have an orderly withdrawal, let the enemy tucker themselves out by taking miles and miles of bullshit so you can charge in and retake everything with fresh troops and equipment. The old Prussian generals refused to retreat and were fucking everything up until they were either shot or replaced.

>>
>>222486565
it was insanely kino when they met... but also a little disappointing, and not because no gay shit went down
>>
>>222486987
it is a problem but you have to just sort of accept it within the in-universe logic
>galactic higher ups have Reinhard's fleet do some suicidal manoeuvre because they hate him and want to get rid of him
>FPA admiral is like "hmmm this must be a trap it's so stupid"
>yang realizes exactly what happens and tries to get them to just go now but he's low rank at this point so no one listens
that kind of thing works fine for me, sometimes it makes no sense, often the tactics are silly but whatever
>>
yang unironically should have used his massive popular support to stage a coup and take over the FPA
>waaaaaah that would contradict my stupid morals about having to follow orders I rather let BILLIONS MUST DIE for Trunhit knowing exactly what's going on the entire time and see my entire civilization collapse
>>
>>222485539

Think of Phezzan like a neutral ground location where a lot of trade happens. Remember both empire and alliance have embassies there to touch base. Cities/countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai etc. have either no or small militaries but are wealthy and have influence nevertheless. It's the same thing with Phezzan.
>>
>>222487148
ya i know but I'm talking about in like the first couple episodes the phezzan guy says to his people
>whoever will benefit us the most will win :)
like they have supreme power over both sides... maybe they had some but phezzan is easily taken out by the empire when they feel like it

Im not that far, I didn't know D:
Im on ep 30, they're just about to kidnap the little kid Kaiser.
Yang is surrounded by enemys, space USA's government is all corrupt and in phazzens pocket, before the fortress battles they were trying to string yang up on bullshit charges. I can imagine them getting to yang. Getting to Reinhard seems like it would be way harder.
>>
>>222489648
im honestly legitimately sorry i didn't really think about it :(
>>
>>222482541
It's actually close to realistic. If you've knowledgable about history and read a few books about some of the classics wars (mostly those before the world wars) you'd know there has been plenty of wars decided by the error of an incompetent general or commander. We've got Vietnam, Afghanistan, Ukraine as modern examples.

The anime does make it a bit too obvious and simplistic but its done so as to execute the plot without being to detailed. It's quite the feat to cover such a immense arc, 100 episodes spanning a decade, you've got to cut some corners to make it happen.
>>
>>222489395
it's two decades old

I ascribe to the popular theory he was poisoned by Emil, the young redhead he chooses to take on as his butler, as a weird pseudo replacement for Kircheis. to make the Alexander the Great symbolisim more clear.
Also while being a good leader it was clear that his heart really was not into it. He just wanted to conquer and make a name. After that live just seemed to have no reason to it anymore.
>>
>>222491225
it was because Yang had a twink of his own that made him tea. the shot was about their similarities in life style
>>
>>222494607
yeah because the entire empire is build around him and his dinasty. Oberstein constantly told him to get married and have kids and not rsik his life in stupid battles.
Oberstein cared more about establishing a well run empire then Reinhard in the end
>>
>>222494732
There isn't much in the way of character arcs, the show covers a few short, very active years through a narrative lense.

We do however get more details of the characters and a big one with oberstein is that he's insecure and doubts himself constantly to the point he refuses to share his opinions, which other characters see as him being secretive and plotting against them
>>

I'm not saying you need to like Yang, it's your prerogative to not like him as a character, but I don't like this redditesque need to put characters into predefined cliches

He's a lazy alcoholic who is bad at the politics his job demands. He was drastically wrong about terrorism changing history. His ideology led to the destruction of his democratic government and inspired his men to engage a suicidal attack that wiped most of them out, all for a dying emperor to propose some mild vague reforms before dying and leaving everything up in the air.

Great post overall but the line is how terrorism can never bring back a previous state of history. E.g. the terraists can kill Yang but nothing they do will bring back the era that they wanted to.
Beyond that it did get annoying how Yang was incapable of making a single strategic mistake in any battle he fought.

Yang believed that not even Cincinatus can be trusted to give up power and return to farm.
He believed history needs a precedence where autoritarianism is defeat without sacrificing republican values.
He ultimately failed and in-universe would most likely be juxtaposed to Goldenbaum:
>Goldenbaum is a military man that went into politics and suceeded
>Yang refused direct political involvement and failed
Yang is a Hanibalian figure

>>222496739
Because one is an element of influence outside the democratic system, the foreign invading army, while Yang taking over supreme rulership is a betrayal from within, a betrayal of the system and its beliefs.
>>
>>222482752
being a good military commander does not necesarly tranlate as being a good civil servant and yang in particular is a mess of a person who wouldnt make for a good ruler
>>
>>222497440
The Alliance-Imperial War is already framed as an ideological battle. The Alliance itself is a rebellion against the Goldenbaum dynasty. If the Alliance loses, then the Imperial system has won, and any possible democratic reform will be just that, a reformation of an absolute monarchy into something more constitutional but ultimately with the Imperial system as a base. Because it triumphed over the Alliance and is therefore superior ideologically. Whereas Yang conquering the empire as Caesar establishes actual republican and democratic priors.
>>
>>222497598
No such thing as a democratic Ceasar, if he had taken full control of the FPA during their coup of foppery and whim and then even by conquering the Empire, he simply becomes the new Emperor. Even if he tried to give up his position and create elections, it ultimately wouldn't have worked because it wasn't a democracy that defeated the Empire, just one Emperor replacing another.
>>
>>222484432
I get what you mean.
Some of the dialogue scenes are really tough to get through.
The main problem them isn't that it is characters talking; it's that almost every dialogue scene is superior lecturing to inferior.
E.g.
>Yang giving a philosophy lecture to Julian
>Reinhard talking, ordering his underling to do something
>Rubinsky giving a PowerPoint presentation to his underling
In other words, there is no real debate about anything. So, the dialogue scenes don't contain drama.
>>
>>222497397

>>222497958
I’m not saying that there’s such a thing as a democratic Caesar, I’m saying that a Caesar figure uniting the galaxy establishes democratic and republican priors rather than imperial ones

>Only Reuenthal, Mittermeyer, and maybe Kircheis were on Yang's level.
Anon, rewatch episodes 15-16
In those episodes Yang fights three separate battles.
First he buttrapes Kempff in Battle of Jafnhár
Then, on his way to Amritsar, he is attacked by Kircheis. Yang notes they are fucked, because Kircheis has more ship and keeps rotating his ships; they are never exhausted. He is barely able to escape.
In Amritsar he hits Mittemeryer so hard, he is forced to flee.
Bittenfeld fleet refuses to flee, so Yang destroys 70% of their fleet.

So, sufficed to say the tier level is:
>Yang > Reinhard > Kircheis > Mittermeyer and Reunthal > everyone else
