I don't consider him to be in the same ballpark as Tolkien because I think they are too vastly different writers, to wit George is definitely aiming at low fantasy, and his worldbuilding is much more detailed, politics-wise, than Tolkien, much more grounded too I'd say. Love them both, but I think Tolkien is better for the soul. George can be haunting sometimes.

He stopped writing because he created way too many new stupid subplots and characters to follow in Feast/Dance becaus he got bored of the main ones, and now he's got himself tangled in a web of his own creation he can't esscape from. Especially since he's way more autistic about continuity and getting all the details right now than he used to be when Storm was the sloppiest book in that regard and was still everyone's favorite one regardless because it had good pacing, compelling character moments and plenty of memorable setpieces so people forgive the small stuff.
