Finally got around to watch it.It stays surprisingly faithful to the narrative structure Homer uses, and it works way better on film than I expected. The Circe section is probably the best sequence of the movie, and some of the effects there are genuinely grotesque and unsettling. Zendaya is not just good, she’s genuinely one of the emotional centrepieces of the whole thing. There are two scenes that actually had me on the verge of crying, try to guess which ones. John Leguizamo gives the best performance, easily, but his character is also my favourite character in the poem. The Cyclops was probably my biggest disappointment. Visually he’s great, but he doesn’t really have a character beyond the spectacle.The very last scene was a bit weird, but honestly still nowhere near as weird as it is in the poem. It featured Nolan doing his annoying thing though where people repeat several lines of dialogue from earlier in the film which he does in all his films, and which I always hate.Overall, pure kino, looking forward to watching it again.

I will admit that watching the return before nolans kinda casts a negative view on nolans both figuratively and literally since visually the return wasnt afraid to have color, characters costumes felt appropriate and no distracting casting choices. music and acting were also better in the return. Also I dont know if it was intentional in nolans odyssey, but I feel like odysseus doesnt feel as clever and has obvious fuck ups even when he has good ideas. like building the trojan horse too close to the sea so they drown before they even move or not making sure all weapons are properly locked away from the suitors, or shooting the cyclops again when they escape just to have to more crew mates die immediately after for it. these are all examples that other adaptations dont have that add more drama, but kinda makes Odysseus feel dumber than he should be.

Removing the scene where Odysseus taunts the Cyclops as he's escaping is particularly disappointing, because it is such an important aspect of Odysseus' personality and the overall theme of the poem.

There are many translations of the odyssey and I don't know what yall read in school now, but I studied it most in 2010 or so (on top of growing up watching the TV show and reading various grade school and children's translations), and it is NOTHING like the source material. It's disrespectful to both history and epic.

For me in 9th grade mid 00s in high school, in our "advanced" English class we had to read a book that was a summary of various mythologies throughout history and they each would be reduced and summarized into popcorn format. The odyssey for example would have only covered a chapter or two of the book. Then there would be a chapter for say Perseus and Medusa and so on. My mother also would buy me children's books in the 90s all the time and I had shelves of them. I had a children's translation of the odyssey around the time when the show came out. Also I would watch shows like Wishbone on TV, and they had an entire episode dedicated to the Odyssey.
