It was kept alive by the older generations whose hobbies consisted of daily television time. Inoffensive and generally positive. Everybody either was related to or knew somebody that they could identify as a “nerd” or “geek”, so it made out of touch people feel more in touch without requiring active participation. My grandmother would call me and talk about, “that Sheldon Cooper, he sure is a wild one,” because she thought I was a nerd and it made her feel like she was more in the know. The weird boomer sort of thing where they don’t actively try to engage with the younger generation’s interests, until the funny TV character mentions Star Wars or video games or something. It was mostly a boomer and Gen X thing.
