>They speak through art, not words.
That's it actually.
Once they become adults, people either become men of action or of words, as in, when they have to get "important" (relative to them) shit done they'll default to one or the other route, with the other one only as a last resort.
If something can be done through action rather than words, men of action will always choose action, and vice versa.

For example, once these "men of action" fail when an action is taken, they will still keep themselves on that path until failure becomes too dangerous (usually meaning: expensive) to sustain, at which point they'll switch to the other or simply give up.
Sometimes though they will dip their toes into the other route just to see how it goes, but if the "water's too cold" they'll go back to their preferred one asap. People who like talking will keep talking in the end and people who like walking will keep walking. Change isn't impossible but very unlikely, and action isn't necessarily always the preferred course either; sometimes diplomacy is for the best.

But to get back on topic, people like the RLM guys decided to be "men of words" in a field that primarly rewards action, and this is the result: fame and success, yes, but at the expense of actually making anything worthwhile in the field they're in. When they "dipped their toes" with that dumb gorilla movie or Space Cops and they unsurpisingly failed, they went back to their preferred route (talking about movies rather than making them), and they will do so again the next time they try to "dip their toes". That's what a lack of convinction and effort in the path you're trying does. Of course, the problem with them and people like them is that they don't like playing second fiddle to men in the other route, so they'll gladly talk about how those men are actually retards who know nothing of the craft and that they would've done it MUCH BETTER of course... only to fall short themselves once they actually try it.

Perhaps, but most shithead film directors have a much higher chance of being remembered through their work than RLM does. After they post their last video, it won't be even 5 years before their "body of work" is forgotten as a whole, with MAYBE the Plinkett videos being the only exception (and even then, the prequel ones, no one will fondly remember his TFA or Avatar reviews).
And keep in mind that this is clearly a problem to them, they themselves are not fine and happy with the way their "artistic" paths turned out, even in spite of the money and e-fame.

>Jay's weird takes
Every other reviewer - ops, I meant "essayist" spews a really dumb opinion under the guise of a weird/hot take nowadays.

The new Plinkett videos suck because Plinkett/Mike had no actual insight on the new movies/series. The prequels videos were at least entertaining because they were the result of decades of reflection on the movies and the pop-culture avalanche they spawned, the ST videos where made after a few years the movies came out and apparently that wasn't enough time for Mike to form an interesting opinion about.

I also got the impression that, despite their attitude, they found the prequels interesting enought to actually analyze, while the sequels for them were just boring and thus they got over them without much interest.

I know you were referring to small-time directors.
>same for the backrooms and obsession guys and countless others
Absolutely not.
Yes, they're obviously a "flash in the pan" movies, but they will still be remembered even in some minor, much more irrelevant way, and a few faggots down the line will still go and watch them for the first time years after their release. This will not happen with any BOTW video or Space Cop, and to be fair that's a problem also tied with how such videos were distributed: YT/internet videos in general are much more susceptible to oblivion, no one nowadays knows who the fuck Fred is nor will they go and watch his movie.
>the prequel reviews were legitimately somewhat revolutionary
So was Heather Feather for another youtube format that now brings in the millions, it's still a "one and done" interest that matters jackshit in the long scheme of culture, even internet culture.

Yes, I said that multiple times. It stil doesn't make them happy or satisfied.
>>
>>222487734
99% of people are incapable of "producing works" because of the high resource barrier of entry, and the personal risk. rlm will be remembered for the original prequel reviews over quite a few directors who made shitty fotm movies, and for quite awhile. They're also sort of gaining notoriety for the likely true theory that they caused Lucas to sell Star Wars to Disney. They were completely correct back then and no one could have put it better. Mike might not be a good director or even capable of writing anything funny that isn't a review but he has that and it can't be taken away.

Obviously, which is why I brought in relativity to quantity and chance as factors. But I still stand that any Z-list movie director is much more likely to be remembered than youtubers like RLM.
>>

So your very subjective opinion, a fact that by itself doesn't guarantee anything, and your headcanon.
Okay, I hope you are capable of realizing why I'm not taking that seriously.
>and you are wrong
The essence of Jay's persona revolves around remembering and proselytizing for such directors, so no, RLM itself proves I'm not wrong.

>Compared to your objective knowledge of the future as a time traveller?
No, compared to the pattern I brought up with comparable examples from the same platform in the same format. I know there's a good chance I might be completely wrong, but at the very least my reason for thinking I'm right doesn't just amount to "because I don't like them".
>proves all of them are more memorable than rlm as well
Yes? Do you really think someone 10 years down the line will do a retrospective on Gorilla Interrupted and Space Cop? Or they BotW videos? And why would they?
>>
>>222489694
>No, compared to the pattern I brought up with comparable examples from the same platform in the same format.
old youtube when Fred was on top was a very different and nascent form of media. I think more people are going to remember Pewdiepie than most irrelevant film directors as well. The internet itself is many decades younger than the obscure shitty movies Jay likes to obsess over so we're both going to have to wait and see how the field of internet history is going to develop. Also, your example of a Youtuber who is no longer relevant doesn't mean much when many thousands of film directors are also no longer relevant. And, I do think Fred will be consistently remarked on whenever early youtube is discussed, which will be sometimes.
>yes?
Yes Lens Kabasinski is more memorable than rlm because one youtube channel that happens to be rlm became interested in his movies? You're not even trying to reach the truth now, you just made an incorrect point and are flat contradicting facts that refute it.
>will people do retrospectives on space cop and botw and gorilla interrupted 10 years from now
possibly, but that's not their most memorable or popular stuff. You don't mention Plinkett who will be brought up as long as Star Wars is still a thing.

>I think more people are going to remember Pewdiepie than most irrelevant film directors as well
Hold it, I didn't say every single youtubers out there is more likely to be forgotten than even the shittiest movie director, reread my posts. My comparison was specifically towards RLM and youtubers of their ilk (read: shitty internet critics that still manage to be popular), the Fred comparison was brought up as an aside on how you're more easily forgotten if your only output is on the internet - in general, not compared to directors. It didn't mean that any e-celeb that ever existed was going to be forgotten faster than any random giallo director.
Of course people like Pewdiepie are gonna be remembered in some way or the other more than any of Jay's FOTM fagcrush.
And no, "early YT" is already discussed enough and Fred is barely cited, and when he is it's in the light of "thing that was really popular that nobody cares about now". People like Smosh or that Favorite Martian guy are usually brought up more than he is, despite being less popular back then.
>is more memorable
Will, not "is", with the point (specified in one of my earlier posts) that the decline of RLM will happen the moment they stop putting out videos. It's easy to see contradicting facts if you're unable to understand what's being said.
> You don't mention Plinkett who will be brought up as long as Star Wars is still a thing.
I did, in a previous post that you obviously did not read (a recurring pattern in your reading comprehension it seems), I also specificed that that would be the case for his prequels videos only, despite the fact that those amount to not even half of his character's total output.

Because appreciating art and actually making it are 2 completely different things. Being a critic allows you to engage deeply with the art in question without having to create.

RLM basically makes money from patreon and the yt equivalent of residuals off their video catalog. Their newer videos are still 500k+ views, which is the norm since the yt algorithm fuckery in the last 2 years that is trying to bury long form vids in favor of shorts.

Half in the Bag is boring now because they refuse to criticize anything that isn't already culturally popular to shit on. It's weird, to me it felt like they were making less half in the bag episodes, but upon checking that doesn't really seem to be the case.
The ones they produce seem to be less analytical though. It's more "I liked it" or "it's missing something", without going into much detail, although the runtime of episodes is still the same.
I stopped caring about best of the worst and other side projects they have since It's mostly just friendship simulator with people I really don't care about.
Overall I just get the feeling like they don't really want to do this anymore.

RLM is so pathetic today because they are cowards. Cowardice is what defines the generation of aging millennials. Too cowardly to have any strong opinions when they can meet resistance. Too cowardly to stand for themselves and openly attack things they don't like, too cowardly to become shills, looking for retreat in cheap irony that used to be so trendy in 00s.
Basically this, fence sitting.

RE:View and similar formats (Black Void, Mike & Jay/Rich talk) still hold up really well, so do any Star Trek episodes because Mike and Rich just know a lot about the series' and are still evidently passionate for the older episodes.
HITB is ok, not to fussed that they've cut out the 'storylines' they used to have in earlier episodes (as they were pretty cringe), but seeing as modern cinema is just devoid of anything then it reflects on HITB that they have fuck all to talk about. I used to like Jay's takes on HITB but now I just don't care.
BOTW is pretty boring now, even when they just stick to the core cast and don't have random scrumblo blumbo guest stars showing up. I'd say there's usually only 1-2 BOTW a year now that are funny, and the Wheel of the Worst or Black Spine are much better because you get some schizo tier shit in those episodes rather than the same b-movie theye've been watching for 15 years.
I still watch RLM, but it's not 'peak' as it once was. I still think their best work was around 2011-2014.
