i only watched matt damon's version so i see ripley as not really that bad but i read that the book portrays him as premeditated. matt's ripley was written as he was sort of pushed by those trust fund kids treating him like he's inferior.

The movie portrays Ripley as sympathetic and Dickie as a cunt.

The Netflix series which is much closer to the book shows Ripley as a cold blooded psycho and Dickie as a literal angel.
