People used to pretend that the 'dumb Empire' from the movies and the 'smart Empire' from the books were the same thing, which allowed Thrawn to look like some kind of mastermind Sherlock. But Disney-era Thrawn, in the cartoons and live-action shows, is surrounded by absolute idiots who lose every single timeAnd honestly, you can blame the movies and Lucas’s own anti-US bias for that. The whole Empire vs rebels dynamic is just a metaphor for the Vietnam war, mixed with fourth reich references. Yeah, Lucas couldn't think of anything deeper than "USA and nazis are bad!" But he overlooked a crucial point: neither the US military nor the nazis were stupid, and both were formidable war machines. The Empire, however, was written to be deliberately incompetentIn a setting like that, Thrawn can't look like a galaxy-brain genius. He can only look efficient. Told to destroy a rebel base? Done. Palpatine wants Ezra captured? Caught. Needs to escape? He escapes. His plans actually work, and that efficiency is exactly what sets him apart from every other imperial general and admiral
