Hes such a lame villain. For the long build up they were having, you'd expect him to look like a demon.

It's like Gollum in LOTR. The source material has both of these characters described as nightmare fuel, even Harry Potter as a children's book still made him sound quite scary. But for a movie you need little kid to go to the cinema and you just can't make the characters look too scary. In fact the very first glimpse of Gollum in Fellowship shows him much more scary, so you know they had him right, but it was too scary and they needed to Disneyfy him with the big eyes

Is it? I don't see LOTR as a kids movie. They could've made Gollum scarier. But yeah, I can see the studio wanted to sell more and make it more friendly

Yes they needed the broadest audience. It's also the other matter of, there are a lot of Gollum scenes especially in the later movies, and if he's absolutely hideous to look at - that will be unpleasant for the audience

the movie design is way better, more memorable and fits the lore much better than whatever tripe would JKR come up with.
He was a regular looking dude who just lost his humanity. He shouldn't look like a scawy monster. He should just look inhumane.

The LOTR movies did a great job. I thought the book would be unfilmable so bravo to Jackson. But movie Gollum is unfortunately quite "cute", which is the polar opposite vibe. In fact when he has his "Smeagol" moments in the two towers, he is described as looking older and more frail than ever, in the book

Also in terms of what he SHOULD look like, as this image shows >>222497082 if you take a "regular looking dude" and have him live unnaturally long for hundreds of years more than he should, in a cave at the bottom of a mountain, he would look absolutely hideous and terrifying. Skin would be drooping off his bones, the face would be skull-like, it would be horrible. In the Lord of the Rings book all of the various side characters who happen to run into Gollum are immediately scared and think he IS a monster. Indeed, something Gollum does once he's out of the mountain and roaming around, is sneak through the windows of houses at night, steal their babies and eat them alive. He eats babies. He's a monster
