He was never an MC, just a dark skinned character to appeal to dark skinned weeaboos. Kubo had enough awareness of them when he started Bleach. It took Naruto until introducing the Raikage and B for there to be any significant darkies.

Kubo wasn't great to his original cast because he just kept coming up with more and more characters who he'd just bring up and drop whenever. It's only because he retcond Orihime's power and the Quincy and the last arc revolves around them that Uryu is even present. Rukia was literally the 2nd character to Ichigo but was completely dropped half-way through the series.
