What are the scariest fucking movies you’ve ever seen? I don’t mean the best horror movies. I don’t want a list of critically acclaimed slowburn atmospheric art pieces. I’m talking absolute thrill rides. Movies that do not relent. Movies that make you jump and scream and keep you up at night in terror. The quality and substance of the actual filmmaking are completely inconsequential to what I’m looking for. Everytime I go looking for something truly terrifying I can’t find one now. I feel like I’ve seen them all, so the more obscure the better. Also very welcome to foreign films, particularly East Asian cinema as they do horror very well.
Only scary part in Sinister is the scene with the footage of family murders. Rest is typical corny bullshit, jumpscare - children with eyeliner - jumpscare - Slipknot member - jumpscare.

>>222504751The last segment of Creepshow has me scared of roaches to this day.
>>222504751Did you watch Triangle (2009)? It's great
>>222504788Plenty of good spoops I thought >>222504790It’s alright, not really keeping me up at night>>222504794Forget that segment. Definitely due a rewatch>>222504802Yeah I’ve seen it, really enjoyed it
>>222504842[Rec]Noroi: The Curse but that's more in the slow burn category
>>222504932[Rec] is fantastic. Haven’t seen Noroi, will add it to my watchlist. Thanks for the recommendation man
Forrest Gump
>>222504751this is the exact opposite of what you asked for, it being both slowburn and atmospheric. i mention it because it's the only film ive ever quit watching because of how it made me feel.it's 'antichrist'.watching it is like bathing in a rapists piss. you feel dirty. it's hard to explain. i quit after 45 mins. another 10 minutes and i'd have been necking myself.
>>222504751Jeepers Creepers. Has quite possibly the best horror movie monster ever created. Imo.
>>222505097Great great movie but yeah not exactly what I’m looking for. Good shout tho>>222505101Great monster movie. Also made by a gay pedo rapist , which I suppose only adds to the horror
>>222504751What exactly do you find scary and terrifying? For me, Hereditary was terrifying and I couldn't sleep for a week, but I did not find Sinister that scary.
>>222505167>a gay pedo rapist , which I suppose only adds to the horrorYeah. I don't give a shit what people do off camera. He made something unique and I'm just glad we got to see it.
>>222505314I still have no idea why /tv/ shits on Hereditary. Well I do, the idea is just shallow contrarianism, but the arguments that are used to hide shallow contrarianism are ridiculously poor.>bonechilling slowburn Movie isn't even slow, it's moderately paced.>le traumaI get being annoyed when a movie goes "none of this was real it was just a metaphor" but the supernatural shit in Hereditary was in fact real. People are just complaining about what, the movie having characters? How terrible!
>>222504751That goofy mask wouldn't look out of place in the 90s Goosebumps series.

>>222505314Some films that jump to mind as particularly frightening to me are Banshee Chapter, Hell House LLC, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, The Taking of Deborah Logan, Grave Encounters. Just adrenaline rushing jump scares with a constant sense of dread for what happens next.
>>222504751The only movie that ever gave me nightmares is The Stuff.

>>222505949I’m looking for more traditional horror but I’m adding this to my watchlist. Looks good
>>222505728If you are bot being disingenuous look up "Hereditary bonechilling slowburn" on the archive.
>>222504751You posted the one that came so close but fumbled the second half, probably because of some exec bullshit. Have to have a clear villain with a jumpscare sequel bait and all that ... I would love to find a movie to actually terrify me for once but after a certain age I dont think its going to happen again. The context always has to relate to reactions of those around you to hit and thats hard - not really 'scary' as such but the baby disappearing in a game of peekaboo in The Witch is one of the scenes that stuck with me for a while. Imagine trying to explain THAT SHIT to the parents.
>>222506156I’d rather not, who even gives a shit
>>222504788>It's only scary when the scary things happen
horror is a foid genre
I think environment is more important than content of the movie. Through my 20s I used to live in an apartment building that had a 70 year history of people dying in it and there was three people on my floor. So ghost movies used to scare me but that was due to the isolation. Plus the building had no hallway windows and was lit with ancient phosphorus bulbs so it had (what the kids are calling) Liminality. As a child I lived next door to a cemetery. So zombie movies used to fuck me up bad. I was 8 when the '90 remake of Night of the Living Dead released on VHS and my mom put it on for me at bedtime. I didn't sleep for days.

seeing pic related at an impressionable age was also on the worst ones. Rest of the movie didnt do much for me, but this scene got me good. Think the sound design played a big role, somehow makes it way worse.
>>222506851Children with eyeliner and a Slipknot members are not scary. Jumpscares stop being startling after three times. You just start sitting there with a pokerface every time one happens. Unless you're a literal baby who thinks their mommy disappears every time she covers her face with hands.
>>222507363Yeah seen that one, didn’t think it was crazy scary. Few good jumps
>>222507402No shit retard. Non scary things happen throughout horror movies
Some of the scares and fear reminded me of things I was terrified as a child and as such hit me pretty strongly.
>>222508004I started the watching Conjuring / Annabelle / Nun movies in chronological order ... I can confidently say theyre all utter trash except the first two.Seriously, tell me you watched The Nun 2 without cringe, I fucking dare you. Theyre not even trying to be scary anymore
Have you seen The Exorcism of Emily Rose? I put off watching it forever because possession movies are usually slop but not only is it a good flick it's pretty scary I would say
>>222506873Exactly. Now what are the scariest movies you've seen, sissy?
>>222508054I did not see the Nun 2 because I thought the first was trash.I only liked the first two Conjurings and enjoyed the Annabelle movies enough to keep the series going, although the one focusing on the children of the MCs from Conjuring sucked because I knew after half way that no one was going to die or get hurt. But after Annabelle Creation I dropped the universe.
>>222508127Creation was the point I dropped it out of frustration. Didnt even watch it to the end, like fuck outta here with our orphanage no scare bullshit. Perfect example of soulless corporate slop.Which is sad, it had potential.
>>222505487Hereditary was kind of peak "the horror is the trauma." We already had Babadook has the quintessential "trauma as the horror" etc but Hereditary was where A24 really became A24 so it blew up in more ways than one and this type of horror started becoming very reddit. That's why /tv/ shits on it despite it being good. Also the fact that Aster made the same movie again except in Sweden.

>>222507043Heading off the calls of bait... wise, because that's what this is.
Genuine question. You guys don't actually get scared from movies, right?99% of the time i watch a movie, since maybe 2003 onwards, it's been in my room alone, before bed, in complete darkness with headphones on. I cannot recall actually ever being scared. Startled sure, but not scared.
Hereditary and it's not even close. Only movie that I couldn't sleep from as an adult. Ari Aster is the definition of a one hit wonder though. His other movies suck.
>>222511608wow what a chad.anyways
>>222507071It's enjoyable, but a cremation oven is so hot that the zombie dust wouldn't have spread.
>>222504842>Plenty of good spoopsjumpscares are cringe and gay, lowest hanging fruit of the spooky
>>222511608It has to be when your mind is malleable. Watching something like Jaws as a child or teenager might make you think twice about beach trips. The Edge might make planes frightening. You have to be receptive to the material (and the same thing might not work on different people) and get that unsettling seed of fear put in your brain. It rarely manifests in full on shrieking, but phobias can be born from convincing fiction.

>>222511816It wasn't zombie dust. It was chemical smoke from burning them getting in the atmosphere.
>>222504751The mother fucker who thought adding this into a kid's comedy movie
I have never seen a movie I thought was legitimately "scary". I guess the closest was Hereditary but it wasnt even close to scary, just uncomfortable. Even that was blown by the hamfisted ending.
>>222513466Some people are better at handling scary movies and/or maybe better at disassociating fear from movies. It could also be you haven't seen a movie that scares you. Maybe its a very specific thing that scares you. For example, it creeps me out when someone peaks around a corner. That alien peaking around the corner in the movie Communion never fails to scare me. I can't explain why.
>>222504751You're a grown man trying to get scared on a cantonese origami board
I often think about this question and every answer I come to is Hereditary. It is legitimately one of the scariest and most effective horror movies I have ever seen. It is such a well made film.
