Saw The Odyssey last night and yeah, Nolan fucking cooked.

This is probably the first time in a while I've left a cinema thinking "ok, this is what a blockbuster is supposed to feel like."

The scale is incredible. Troy looks enormous, the ships feel completely real, the crowds are huge, and everything has this physical weight to it. You can actually believe these places and events exist. Apparently they built a lot of this stuff for real too, and it shows.

And the IMAX photography is insane. There are shots where you're just sitting there wondering how the hell they even filmed them. The sea especially looks unbelievable. I saw it in IMAX and I really don't think this is one where you should wait for streaming.

What surprised me most though is how much horror there is. The Cyclops, Hades, Circe, some of the stuff at sea. Nolan makes the mythology feel genuinely strange and dangerous instead of turning it into generic fantasy action. The sound design is incredible too.

Matt Damon is really good. I expected the movie to be more about the spectacle, but there's a pretty miserable, exhausted character underneath all of it. He's spent years fighting and then years trying to get home, and you can actually feel what all of that has done to him.

Pattinson is having an absolute blast too. Anne Hathaway surprised me the most though. There's a couple scenes with her that are genuinely great.

The best thing about it is probably how sincere it is. It treats the story like an actual myth and doesn't try to make it feel more contemporary than it needs to. For all the spectacle, it never feels like Nolan is constantly stopping to remind you how much money was spent on the movie.

I get why some people might have issues with the dialogue or the runtime, but neither bothered me nearly as much as I expected.

Just a ridiculously ambitious movie that actually manages to pull it off.

9.5/10

Yes, this scene (which you pathetically cut in 360p to try and make it look bad) was amazing

If the script were any more contemporary, it would've been filled with ebonics and brain rot speak, frfr.
>>
My friend's woke fat Mexican roommate say this movie and said it was trash. That's how I know everybody praising it is a shill.

I have not heard a single person in real life talk positively about this movie.
Not a single person.

i actually saw the Odyssey like 2 weeks ago and it is the most absolute 4 star mid movie and nothing else
i mean its good, but nowhere near great
i got to see Ben Hur months ago around easter and it absolutely is a better film and cinematic experience in every way
>The scale is incredible
>I've heard people legit say its a modern classic
guess thats just where the bar is these days
i mean the Northman was better
Troy is a better movie than the Odyssey, some parts. nolan doesn't know how to film action or pace a story

K

also fuck off.
>>
>>222507164
>"It's not woke honest"
>Black Helen of Troy
she has only two scenes and does nothing important
>Black Greek sotryteller
has only one scene and a voice cameo near the end, less than a minute of screentime. His first scene ends with Penelope telling him to, in less polite terms, shut the fuck up
>FTM 'Greatest warrior ever"
Sinon is not called the greatest warrior ever. Odysseus calls him brave because he feels guilty getting him killed to sell the ruse of the Trojan horse
>Odysseus portrayed as tired/bumbling/washed up
Odysseus is never portrayed as anything but competent and intelligent. You’re just lying about this.
>2nd in command a literal jeet
And gets himself killed because he doesn’t listen to Odysseus
>Random Asian in the crew
Has no lines and gets himself killed by the Sirens in the only scene that gives him any focus
>All women constantly saying men are pigs, its men's fault, basically fuck men
Also untrue. Only woman who says anything remotely like this is Circe and she’s portrayed as batshit insane. Her turning Odysseus’ men into pigs is not justified at all since they never attack or insult her.

Missing the point on these. They are necessary woke changes to push a conservative dogwhistle.
>Black Helen and her twin
Used to show the dangers of racemixing. And how black females are spousekillers. Wouldn't work the same if they weren't black.
>black bard
There weren't any smoke detector back then. So they had to have a black guy tap annoying in a room while everyone eats. To remind everyone how annoying the smoke detector situation is.
>FTM warrior who was decieved and died for the war
Used to enforce how trans people are decieved. Convinced to die in shootings for the cause.
>Jeet
>Asian
H1B hires. Constantly trying to mutiny and take over.
>Circe
Used to show that foreign men invade women's homes. Then shame women for
defending themselves.

>Trojan horse
Used to show how hospitality and cultural acceptance is bad. They only lost because they accepted foreign offering and let the enemies that destroy them in.
>Greek visiting islands, sea people, suitors
Shows rude foreigners trying to be violent, take over, steal, and kill.

Nice rightwing dogwhistle by Nolan.

>Used to show the dangers of racemixing. And how black females are spousekillers. Wouldn't work the same if they weren't black.
No that's used to show men are bad.
>annoying black bard
No, Nolan literally said it's because the oral poetry of Homer was the "original rap."
>Used to enforce how trans people are decieved. Convinced to die in shootings for the cause.
Okay tranny, that's a retarded stretch of an interpretation and you outed yourself there.
>H1B hires. Constantly trying to mutiny and take over.
The implication is Odysseus deserves it for being a bad leader.
>Then shame women for
defending themselves.
This didn't happen. Matt Damon apologized for his men's behavior. It was another "men are bad" moment.
>They only lost because they accepted foreign offering and let the enemies that destroy them in.
Which Odysseus literally tells Penelope was bad and we da seapipo now n sheeeit.
>Shows rude foreigners trying to be violent, take over, steal, and kill.
Same as above. The Greeks brought all of this onto themselves because they broke "Zeus's law" with the horse. Nolan implies in an interview that this relates to being nice to shitbag foreign invaders in our current times.
>Nice rightwing dogwhistle by Nolan.
Nice troon fanfic.

Odysseus in this was catholic guilt for killing but still being justified by morality

I'm glad that Nolan's adaptation really emphasized how the eurocentric Greeks did a genocide on the peaceful, helpless citizens of Troy and how, at the end, Odysseus is a PTSD veteran who becomes an activist, abandoning his wealth and power and yelling, "decolonize Troy!" as he sails his Ship of Peace into the sunset, searching for atonement and forgiveness.
So powerful and relevant and valid.
