If you take disney wars into consideration, the whole nine films is about Palpatine rise to power and Rey tearing it apart. The Vader/Luke story is a subplot within it, the whole 20 year Empire is just baby steps into Palpatine's reign, the Death Star 1 and 2 are but failed attempts for what would culminate in the destruction of several planets by the bigger and better First Order, coordinated by the cloned Palpatine.

Would have the Sequel trilogy been saved had they just stuck to JJ the whole Run?
