He knew there was no way Nickelodeon would let him end their golden goose so he entrusted it to one of his friends to continue. Everything you see in the show now is to cut cost and streamline the production to maximize roi.

Someone posted a clip to this and while the person who posted enjoyed the wacky antics I couldn't help but notice how dog shit the animation, framing, and energy had become without the original creator. I'm sure he did a ton of storyboard and in-between stuff.
