I truly believe you can't really understand British television/movies as a non-brit. Class culture and classism colours all our fiction and you have to live it to understand it. So much of it is subconscious and subtle

I think most people know these stories only exist to make poors feel like they and their lineage have a chance at being anything but the disposable labourers they are. Most American media uses this dynamic too. At this point it would be very hard to have an MC who is richer than everyone else without making him hate other rich people, give away his wealth, etc.
