Are there any good legit documentaries about video game development? Not interested in sloptuber video essays.
>>222519912there's a lot of faggy retrospective ones, but i'd say your best bet is watching behind the scenes production things during development instead of something encompassing all games in general, like the classic oblivion onehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvm0CN3tQFI

Watch I Finished a Video Game on YouTube. His shit is better than anything you'll find by a professional studio.
>>222519963came here to post this
>>222519912Not a feature documentary, but here's a neat 15 minute short on the development of the NES game Solstice, which is an isometric dungeon crawler. Cool little time capsulehttps://youtu.be/894_PNqBkx4

op just ask your doctor for some hormones you fuckin queer
>>222519963>oblivion was 60 people in 4 years>studios now can't do something half as good with 4 times the staff and twice the development time fucking hell

>>222520413>game literally no one heard about>mostly does voice acting for games nobody heard aboutso why is she at the game awards?
>>222521163I genuinely cannot fathom what causes this. Every place I've worked has basically gotten more efficient over time, I work in software development so I just never understood what the fuck could probably be happening at video game companies where somehow if you double the resources you 10x the dev time.
>>222521492>I genuinely cannot fathom what causes this.jeets
>>222521163>>222521492when a software company starts hiring full time scrum masters and agile coaches, expect productivity to plummet 400%
>>222521490If you'll look closely she's not even there, just lazily blue screened over
>>222521557I am the agile guy at my work and I basically don't do anything but rubber stamp things lmao. I guess it's a good job because yeah micromanaging the shit bogs us down pretty badly. The last place I worked at I was there for 9 years and at the beginning, we knocked out projects in like 6 months of time. Layers of review and bureaucracy got added over the years and when I left, it took about 2 years to get an ATO for anything, and when I checked with one of my friends who still worked there, one thing had just passed 4 years of development, I love it
>>222519912There was a cool documentary about Ultima in like 2010 but fuck me if i can find it or remember the name.
>>222521838HAIL, FIELDER
>>222521492Video game companies have been taken over by film people and non "Gaymers". It was already obvious with Sony and Microsoft, but when Warner Bros basically bankrupted Midway and bought them it was a clear sign that something is wrong.
>>222519912There should be more. I would have loved to see one during Blizzard's prime years.

>>222519912No, not really. There are three or four feature length docs that focus on development and design and even they are semi-decent. Unless you're really interested in the intricacies of the fucking Donkey Kong 1981 arcade game or Space Invaders you're better off watching youtube videos on the topic.
>>222519912No. There's like one on Donkey Kong, two on Mario and seventeen on Tetris, neither of which are very good.
>>222521313so cool
>>222522174>NetHackhow the fuck do i ascend i've been playing for 8 months?
>>222521492Middle managers, HR departments and women slow shit down to a crawl. Greedy CEO's outsourcing to indians to save a few bucks and then they fuck up everything if it isn't some basic UE5 slop and it creates more work for the domestic dev team. (Starfield obviously had issues with this but they will never admit it)Also low pay. The guys who do all the work get paid fuck all so they probably start to half ass their work. Back in the day smaller dev teams did profit sharing so they had an incentive to work hard. Blizzard was the last hold out doing this until Jewish execs at Activision finally pulled the plug on it after they managed to strongarm all the old Blizzard execs out. Speaking of Blizzard, their diversity department is bigger than the team that shipped World of Warcraft.
>>222521313was kino, thanks. game was huge with me and my dad and my uncle when I was like 5 years old
>>222521015Did Fez really make Phil Fish enough for him to fuck off forever?
>>222521163Sure, but compare that to the amount of assets you use in a video game today.Everything you see in a game has to be created, every behavior coded. Now they even have actors using motion capture cameras, which they use for character movement. But then again, while all major games are undoubtedly more complicated in design and scope, what all those retards are missing is actually fun gameplay.I think the main issue when scaling up and having a major video game company, is that translating a fun game mechanic into a triple A multi million dollar venture is difficult, so they begin to inject filler, bloating the scope of whatever project they're on.Look at RDR2, for example, they took the same mechanics from the first game, and then added a ton of unnecessary bloat, and pivoted into multiplayer because that earns more money. The gameplay is fun, when you get to play, but all of the additions that require a huge studio are utterly unnecessary, unless you're a simpleton who enjoys a "cinematic gameplay experience".There are so many areas where a smaller team would have done it much better, apart from the graphics and mechanics. The world was unnecessarily large, and the writing was absolutely atrocious, with major ludonarrative dissonance occurring every time you're forced into a cutscene about a character the game is forcing you to play as.Because they're a large studio, they want to pander to as large a consumer base as possible, in order to justify their own existence, so the ultimate experience, while grand in scale, is lackluster at best, and becomes more and more tedious as you go on.
>>222521492making the game "look good" takes way more time now, nowadays you have whole segments of game studios dedicated to shit like photogrammetry or some other highly specialized branch of 3D/Art/Coding/Design around the time of the first Mass Effect is when this balooning in fidelity started really going into overdrive
