Unlike comedies which have universal humor that people in Germany, Japan or Brazil can understand, the writing here falls completely flat for outside audiences. Shows like King of the Hill or Seinfeld show that you don't have to make the show generic and void of character. Hank Hill is a stereotypical Texan, but he is also a square and everyone knows a guy like him in their own culture. He is given time to show his worldview, making him likeable. In Superbad and Napoleon dynamite on the other hand, all the characters are completely obnoxious. It is just assumed you will not hate them because you yourself lived through that era and were just as unlikable as them.
the movie perfectly captures life as a kid that was kind of a loser but still had friends but wanted to be popular. If you were popular or had 0 friends then it won't appeal to you.
I didn't really care for the movie. I didn't hate it though. Still better than "Chicken Jockey!"
