The colosseum was actually built ontop of a shark breeding ground. The basement was absolutely jam packed with sharks.

I think about the degrees of enchantment that people from the past would have. If you're a common villager from preindustrial times, anywhere in the world, then some travelling people show up wearing masks and acting weird in front of a curtain, that can be quite a magical experience. They have never seen a photograph, never travelled in fast vehicles, there is no new trend being sold to them, nothing flashing in front of them.The flashing new things made us completely numb to what would mesmerize the ancient mind. We have seen explosions and CG monsters on tv before we could even experience the real world. Imagine seeing an explosion in real life without even knowing how it looks or sounds like from the years of exposure to 80s action films.You've got to understand that in ancient times, a statue of a person, or a lifelike lion sculpture was something to behold, it would be like seeing a trippy hologram in today's time, something unnatural, that looks like a lion but is made of stone and stands still guarding the door of this rich guy that made you travel for months to reach this palace you have only heard of from secondary sources.So when they try and recreate older times in modern movies, something's gotta give. Either they go closer to we what we can infer from a certain period (ex: Barry Lyndon, Quest for Fire) and end up with what most modern people would think is boring or too slow. Or you make something that is attractive and flashy to the audiences at the expense of abandoning the portrayal of the historical zeitgeist. Most movies, balance between those (Apocalypto, Austen adaptations, Gladiator) creating something watchable, somewhat historically accurante but not really, taking lots of liberties.All to say I doubt they had sharks in the Colosseum, I think they had like a tank, people in little canoes playing teams and recreating stories of battleship, but that itself would have been as awesome for the time.
