>Destin Daniel Cretton would originally direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. When Marvel redeveloped it into Avengers: Doomsday, he dropped out. Kevin Feige then offered him Spider-Man: Brand New Day and put him in contact with Sony execs Amy Pascal and Tom Rothman, who were searching for a new director after Jon Watts from the Home trilogy declined to return, and Cretton’s pitch landed him the job.

>Other directors in consideration were Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Uncharted), Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, Bad Times at the El Royale), Justin Lin (Fast and Furious, Star Trek Beyond), John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein (Game Night, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) and Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys For Life, Batgirl).

>Writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers decided early on that mind control would be part of the plot, and cycled through several villains like Mister Negative and the Spider Queen before landing on Jean Grey.

>Tom Holland produced the film compiled a document with everything fans had been asking for, such as a practical suit and street-level stakes, to serve as a creative guideline.

>Zendaya recruited Challengers writer Justin Kuritzkes to polish the Peter/MJ scenes. She also suggested that MJ get along well with the Punisher and be fascinated by his lifestyle rather than dislike him as in the original script.

>Holland and Jon Bernthal are longtime friends and helped each other through their Marvel auditions. Bernthal refused to portray the Punisher in PG-13 projects, but made an exception for Holland. Due to their natural chemistry, Peter and Frank’s dynamic changed from them hating each other to them having a brotherly rivalry.

>Production was delayed for six months when Holland signed on for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which allowed Cretton and the writers to refine the script. Holland was adamant about having a complete draft before production started to avoid the post-production issues of the Home trilogy.

>Holland’s original pitch for the plot was rejected for being too similar to Captain America: Brave New World. Spider-Man fighting the Hulk was moved from the third act to the midpoint for the same reason.

>Before Bill Metzger, the director of the Department of Damage Control was a woman based on an obscure X-Men villain, the Leper Queen. Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman, Carrie Coon and Sarah Snook all turned down the role before it was rewritten into Metzger.

>The Rhino, 8-Ball, Big Wheel, Paste Pot Pete and the Enforcers are among the villains that were cut from the opening montage. Cretton said that they developed 50 recreations of classic comics covers, but only used five.

>The original ending featured Jean controlling all the supervillains Spider-Man had arrested in the opening montage into attacking him simultaneously, but it was ultimately scaled down to Spider-Man fighting DODC guards and the Hand.

>An alternative draft featured Spider-Man teaming up with Shang-Chi to fight the Hand, with Silver Samurai as one of the villains. Cretton liked the concept of Spider-Man fighting an army of ninjas too much and kept the Hand in as DODC enforcers.

>Cretton wanted to introduce the Bar with No Name where low-level supervillains hang out, but it didn’t fit the narrative.

>There were plans for a nightmare sequence where Peter turns into Man-Spider, but it was deemed too scary for kids.

>In addition to Yelena Belova, there were also plans for Captain America to make an appearance, and Anthony Mackie visited the set in full costume while filming Avengers: Doomsday in the studio lot next door.

>Rosario Dawson filmed a scene as Claire Temple that was deleted from the final cut. She now runs an underground clinic for vigilantes, and Spider-Man visits her to get patched up after his fight with the Scorpion.

>Another deleted scene features the doctor operating on Spider-Man after he is shot choosing to keep his mask on to preserve his secret identity. Meanwhile, the Punisher clashes with the police officers outside.

>The ending scenes of MJ sitting on the school rooftop and holding the necklace Peter gave her, and Ned instinctively doing his and Peter’s handshake were filmed in a deliberately ambiguous way. MJ and Ned could have regained their memories, or MJ may simply be developing feelings for Peter all over again, while Ned connected the dots after MJ called Spider-Man “Peter” earlier.

>The flashback scene of Jean and her sister Sara in the park was added in reshoots to further establish their bond. Despite Sara being the older sister, her actress is 15 while Sadie Sink is 23.

>Sadie Sink revealed that there was a cut where Jean verbalizes that V-Max was just the faded sticker in the air vent of the cell where Sara died and that her actions were for nothing, but it was ultimately decided Jean’s heartbroken expression after seeing the sticker and realizing the truth got the point across well enough.

>Holland said that they tested an alternative ending where MJ and Ned regain their memories, but both everybody disliked it.

Glad there was some sort of acknowledgment of this. Two movies in a row where Hulk is the main hook is too much.

>Anne Hathaway

Would have been funny to have another actor from The Odyssey in it.

When can we expect Spider-Man to get the Batman treatment and they start making dark/gritty movies of him. Fuck these kids

Good.
