This movie is all over the place and has no thematic consistency. It's also unnecessarily moralistic and tries to hard to be modern. I don't know what he was going for.

If you have ever read the Iliad, you would know that the Trojans and Greeks worshipped the same Gods and that Agamemnon did many dishonourable things to their priests which the Greeks did not like. The Gods of Olympus picked sides, they did not all support the Greeks or the Trojans. It was essentially a massive game to them and what the Greeks did to the Trojans offended some Gods and what the Trojans did to the Greeks offended them. The sanctity of the temples of Athena and Apollo were desecrated. It represents the transition from a mythical, mysterious, utopian ancient past to a more materialist, cruel and martial classical past.
