I don't know how to feel about Grace, he feels miscast and not at the same time. He's good at being a darker version of Tobey, which is the point, but it doesn't feel like it was very worthwhile.The only thing accurate about Hardy Venom is that the symbiote doesn't turn people evil. He's too sanitized. They try to make him more of a generic hero but that's not Venom's appeal at all, he's supposed to be an insane anti-hero with warped morals. I don't like how symbiotes are depicted here at all either. It feels like the human doesn't do much at all, it's like Venom does 90% of the work and Eddie is just there being puppeteered around.

Venom's story in SM3 was very close to original comic version; he's a disgraced new reporter, gets the symbiote after Spider-Man had it and has a personal grudge with Spider-Man for ruining his career. There were some key changes though, namely the fact that in the movie he deserved to have his career ruined as he faked that photo, while in the comic he made an honest mistake, so the element that he feels justified in his actions is missing. Also in the comic he was at the church asking forgiveness because he was going to kill himself, while in the movie he's asking god to kill Peter, which is a major change in his character. Raimi basically made him more evil.And of course there is the basic fact that Topher Grace wasn't nearly as much of a big guy as Eddie Brock is supposed to be. That was also true for Hardy but in that movie they made the symbiote appear to be a big guy with Eddie just awkwardly floating inside, while in the Raimi version they left the symbiote skintight on the user like it's supposed to be and just accepted that this Venom wasn't going to be as big as in the comic. I think I actually prefer the latter approach.

Eddie doesn't want to be bigger than Peter, he just wants what he took from him. If that means becoming an evil version of him then that's all it takes.
