There are much worse comic book films that didn't bomb, so it's obviously not a matter of quality. Nor is it an issue with female super heroes, as both Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel were hugely successful.

Nothing about the trailer made it look like a must see movie and when I did see it on streaming it genuinely looked like the pilot for some generic sci-fi network show. You can see Gunn's fingers all over the project and its worse for it. The comic is meh but the sci-fi fantasy visuals are good and on film are replaced by piss filters and smoke here.
