I think it's because we were on a break from school across the street and we were representatives of the school or something. The vice principal would do rounds and sometimes bust you in the woods around the school. If you were on school time, you were subject to their rules.

Before my time, but it's just memorable stereotypes crammed together with high emotions. Get some strong attitudes while they're young and cute, it's an easy sell with basic drama writing. Saturday school for delinquents existed when I was in school. Also breakfast club is a perfect high school movie to show different kinds of cliques arent so different and can get along but it even poignantly points out that they won't be friends after this is over most likely. I kind of hate John Hughes. There's such a sickly unpleasant sort of atmosphere to these films. The characters are all shallow and kind of awful. There seems to be this understated assertion that assholes win, and that's a good thing.

High school just seems to be a tough time for the vast majority of Americans. I think we have a very gregarious culture which rewards the most sociable people disproportionately. If you’re in the bottom 75% socially you end up feeling like you’re missing out while all the “cool kids” enjoy High School and have the time of their lives.
Getting good grades isn’t valued. Even being a great athlete isn’t valued unless it’s one of the popular sports whose games are well attended by the student body.
A lot of women especially don’t come out of their shell until college and end up resenting their time in high school because they kind of just sat in obscurity and never asserted themselves or had their needs met by their friend groups. A big part of it is probably that each grade is separated by birth year and you end up with kids hitting puberty 2-3 years before some other kids, and the late bloomers are always a bit behind socially.

Yeah pretty much every coming of age film/show has the same theme. Jock has parent issue. Pretty girl can't take the pressure etc. The only reason 16 candles is so timeless is John Hughes was at the peak of that genre before he died. Almost all his films are timeless classics now.
As for detention, weekend detention was unheard of in my area. I think it's fallen out of favor completely being parents are too busy for that crap. Ya got 40min free, can't wait 2h of detention.
