I had to buy another 6tb drive recently because I was all out of space and had one drive die on me. Had needed one for months but just couldn't justify the purchase because everywhere was asking $150+ from what I paid for the same drive in March. After monitoring it daily managed to get it for $80 more than I paid in March and no shit the day after I bought it the price shot back up over $100. I’ve never had a hdd die on me. My pc was built in 2012 and the mobo/cpu is still good too. I suspect it’s cause I went overkill on the cooling. Big ass cpu fan and great airflow from my case. I even have those fans that use a hdd slot and blow up onto the hdds. Even my old ssd from 2014 still works but I got spooked from the supposedly 10 year life span and replaced it last year.

I've still got a 1tb one of those kicking from around 2012 although I've had two WD 5tb passports fail on me. One was a clear manufacture defect and was cooked within a few weeks and they thankfully replaced it and I only lost about 25% of the data on the drive when backing up to the new one.
Other one was like five years old and when backing up to a new drive it kept fucking up and disconnecting during transfer. Eventually died and just stopped being read the day after I got all the files off it.

Yes, running them with the retarded power management spinning them up/down every 5 minutes will absolutely wear them down more than letting them run. Few dozen cycles per year for backup and zero when the drive is filled on the other hand is absolutely less stress than constant grinding.
