Old people are scary and they smell.

They're also scary because of the way they are revered in society. If you get into any kind of altercation with an old person, there's a feeling most people have that even if you're right, you're wrong, even if the old person is acting crazy, you're still supposed to humor them and you're morally reprehensible if you don't.

It's similar to what makes cops so compelling as villains, they're only flesh and blood like you, but they have this status in society that gives them incredible power over you, and even if you're in the right, it doesn't matter because there's no way for you to fight back, whereas it's very easy for them to attack you in numerous different ways.

It's simplistic and minimalistic to say that the fear of the elderly is all about fear of one's own mortality.
