I remember watching Gran Torino on a laptop with my brother, for whatever reason we both thought it was gonna be an action movie with Eastwood gunning down gangsters.

It's not a coincidence. Those filmmakers were trying to hit the right tone or zeitgeist of 2000s hollywood. They got pretty close by making movies about a shitty world and shitty time. It would be easy to say they failed or didn't catch on, but the game was rigged. The real zeitgeist wasn't anywhere in hollywood anymore, it was online -- a distinctly un-cinematic place. Movies like NCFOM, Gran Torino, Taken, Synecdoche NY, and pic related are the true cinema of the 2000s, cinema of death and desperation. Haunting reminders of love and honor in a world of vulgar battle and abandonment. The death song of 100 years of hollywood.
