The moment Caesar died, the Macedonian legions under his command were instantly ready to fight for him despite a total lack of military accomplishments and the fact that there were much more popular options on the table (Antony, Lepidus, etc.). Also we have stories of him being projecting an image of being friendly and easy-going. It was part of his persona as the first emperor, he simply referred to himself as "first citizen" and kept up the lie that he wasn't an absolute monarch even though that's clearly what he was. I have no doubt that he was a cold-blooded psycho privately, you don't amass that level of power otherwise, but he wouldn't have been so obvious about it.
