How I thought Sword and Sorcery movies were gonna be like
>A man stalks through a dark castle, every step a possible end to his journey, sword always held at the ready. Women in chains writhe on walls, a few having wasted away. The man using better judgment, sadly has to leave them like this, as to not alert the dark lord

How Sword and Sorcery movies were mostly like

Yeah because it was directed by Lucio Fulci. The rest of non-Conan Sword and Sorcery movies are all tongue-in-cheek and therefore a bit gay. But Fulci brought his experience making zero-budget horror nasties into a zero-budget sword and sorcery nasty. Conquest is very fucking good because it's Metal, it's very gruesome and dark, and it has soul.

>>
>>222605545
I can only think of partial examples.
Dragonslayer. The hero is a mage, though he gets a magical polearm forged and that's what he uses to fight; and he fights evil dudes at some point, though they're not the final boss.
Willow. Just like above, except the mage hero has a fighter friend. Villain being a mage makes it less relevant to the question.
Star Knight (El Caballero del Dragón). Sort of, the hero is an alien who fights a knight.
Earthsea. Probably the closest in premise, though I don't remember all the details, I know it's a mage dude and the guild he belongs to against the normal dudes.
Mythica. It's a D&D party where the most main character is the mage. They often fight armed dudes/orc/zombies, and the first movie's final boss is a cave troll (I mean, it's a physical might kind of enemy). Third and fourth movies have major non-magical antagonists though they are not the big boss either.

The weather beaten trail wound ahead into the dust racked climes of the baren land which dominates large portions of the Norgolian empire. Age worn hoof prints smothered by the sifting sands of time shone dully against the dust splattered crust of earth. The tireless sun cast its parching rays of incandescense from overhead, half way through its daily revolution. Small rodents scampered about, occupying themselves in the daily accomplishments of their dismal lives. Dust sprayed over three heaving mounts in blinding clouds, while they bore the burdonsome cargoes of their struggling overseers.

"Prepare to embrace your creators in the stygian haunts of hell, barbarian", gasped the first soldier.

"Only after you have kissed the fleeting stead of death, wretch!" returned Grignr.

A sweeping blade of flashing steel riveted from the massive barbarians hide enameled shield as his rippling right arm thrust forth, sending a steel shod blade to the hilt into the soldiers vital organs. The disemboweled mercenary crumpled from his saddle and sank to the clouded sward, sprinkling the parched dust with crimson droplets of escaping life fluid.

The enthused barbarian swilveled about, his shock of fiery red hair tossing robustly in the humid air currents as he faced the attack of the defeated soldier's fellow in arms.

"Damn you, barbarian" Shrieked the soldier as he observed his comrade in death.

Shame the new Deathstalker movie sucked so much. Easily the worst in the series, and that includes 3 and 4.
>>
>>222608034
Arriving after dusk in Gorzom, grignr descended down a dismal alley, reining his horse before a beaten tavern. The redhaired giant strode into the dimly lit hostelry reeking of foul odors, and cheap wine. The air was heavy with chocking fumes spewing from smolderingtorches encased within theden's earthen packed walls. Tables were clustered with groups of drunken thieves, and cutthroats, tossing dice, or making love to willing prostitutes.

Eyeing a slender female crouched alone at a nearby bench, Grignr advanced wishing to wholesomely occupy his time. The flickering torches cast weird shafts of luminescence dancing over the half naked harlot of his choice, her stringy orchid twines of hair swaying gracefully over the lithe opaque nose, as she raised a half drained mug to her pale red lips.

Glancing upward, the alluring complexion noted the stalwart giant as he rapidly approached. A faint glimmer sparked from the pair of deep blue ovals of the amorous female as she motioned toward Grignr, enticing him to join her. The barbarian seated himself upon a stool at the wenches side, exposing his body, naked save for a loin cloth brandishing a long steel broad sword, an iron spiraled battle helmet, and a thick leather sandals, to her unobstructed view.

"Thou hast need to occupy your time, barbarian",questioned the female?

"Only if something worth offering is within my reach." Stated Grignr,as his hands crept to embrace the tempting female, who welcomed them with open willingness.

While I don't think you are necessarily wrong, especially as millennials are too irony poisoned and lacking in IRL experiences to write earnest stuff, I also think a big problem is that instead of Greg from Wisconsin getting bored and coming up with the idea of a fun authentic S&S story, it's J'Gwilius the mulatto light skin who grew up in downtown Detroit and is now hired in a studio in LA where he get his ass blown out by a different man every night and also his job is to be the creative lead for stuff like this. I sort of agree but you won't really find J'Gwilius behind this stuff. It's still a bunch of middle aged white guys and white women, but they're now trying to court J'Gwilius for some misguided reason.
I guess white people have been trained to feel bad whenever they have an interest that's too white.
>>
>>222610175
Ya I think I was definitely a little imprecise there. Alot of the reason for trying to court zesty lightskins into stuff like this is because the American education system is literally centered largely around nigger worship, where all 4 years of HS American history more or less spends 70-80% of the class talking about niggers, so these people who live in over socialized environments have nothing other than to overthink about these people when it doesn't make sense to. They always cover it by talking about trying to appeal to a "wider" audience that's more diverse. The problem is that you just create slop that doesn't really appeal to anyone on a meaningful way and you lose your original dedicated White audience

I think that really corrupts the feel of the fantasy world. Any adult will be able to see the overt political messaging behind it and it will take them out of the story completely.
There's also something really dark and unsettling about a person's imagination being restrained by whatever is racially satisfying to others.

Top the artist seems ot have come up with a plausible explanation why the characters are posed like that. It looks like they were camped and then are reacting to something and very quickly getting into battle formation.

Bottom the cast is lined up for no discernible reason. Human beings DO NOT naturally line up like that. But you know what modern workflow for animation prioritizes? Flat worlds where everyone stands side by side (you can thank South Park and Family Guy for this).

Once you see that much of modern animation takes place in "flatlands" you cannot not see it. This is just how modern artists are trained. Very flat, cartoony style, rather than realistic detail and shading. Much of the early fantasy art were literally paintings. Do you think the guy on the bottom can do an oil on canvas painting? He works entirely in digital tools.

I won´t dispute that most of the genre is comprised of gym dudes on cheap wigs and women light on clothing (which is why i find weird that the genre didn´t survive or doesn´t return. Clearly it´s target audience is willing to tolerate budgetary constraints) but some are pretty good. Conan, Kull the conqueror, Beowulf.

Furthermore with the advances on VFX it is now cheaper than ever to achieve decent results. I´m not saying every movie could be Conan 2011 or John Carter (VFX wise) but a well managed budget could probably pull out something better (VFX wise) than that Dune miniseries that came out in the early 2000. The only issue may be distribution. A movie like that won´t do well on cinemas and no streaming service would want to touch it and with the home video business all but dead the only way to do this would be as a crowd founded enterprise.

I agree that essence and substance matters in fantasy a lot, but the aesthetics should be inspired and imaginatively, and aptly reflect / transmit the substance

A good story but shit aesthetics is useless in fantasy, there has to be inspired design

sure but i kind of disagree that stuff like S&S is imaginative. it was once imaginative, sure, but its rather static now and the people who yearn for its return are not people who yearn for genuine imagination. they just want the familiar. truly imaginative fantasy aesthetics seem to be what "fantasy fans" fear more than anything
>>
Sarah Douglas as Queen Taramis in Conan the Destroyer
>>
>>222616536
just to clarify, i completely despise the modern nu-DnD horseshit as much as all the other anons here and vastly prefer S&S, but i still dont really yearn for its return. i just want imagination, daring, depth and width. i think fantasy fans need to unironically start looking at the real world again and realize how wonderfully strange human beings can be.
>>
>>222616536
I don't necessarily think that latter Sword & Sorcery is that imaginative. Similar to Tolkienesque High Fantasy, it is just an echo of its superior source material (Conan, or in the case of High Fantasy, LOTR obviously)

Conan and LOTR both emerged in a period of writing heavily informed by what are now regarded as "weird fiction", which, while it didn't necessarily have the rigorous social themes of science fictions, did have an ontological strangeness and vibrancy at the core of that mode of writing. Conan was written for the Weird Tales milieu, and while LOTR was written somewhat separately from that, Tolkien was a fan of some of those writers and his philosophy of writing, which had to do with a sort of reviving or refreshing of the wonder inherent in experience, reflects that weird fiction mode exercised by writers like Arthur Machen (which reaches back into older mythological or folkloric methods, coming from a numinous ontological outlook)

Most of the "fantasy" genre following from Tolkien or Howard lack that kernel of profundity, but it is still reflected in the imagery, which always seems to promise something more than the genre usually delivers
>>
>>222616564
>>
>>222616645
I agree. I think something that is missing among fantasy consumers and creators today is that the fundamental guiding pillar principle of Tolkiens work was his deep love and appreciation of language, which is THE foundation of human culture. Tolkien's work is an abstracted celebration of human culture on its most base level which is why it resonates with so many people all over the world. The new creators need to stop trying to capture a certain zeitgeist like with nu-DnD and instead try to capture the fundamental and eternal. It's a challenge for sure, but thats what separates the greats from the rest, and we all want more great stuff, don't we?
>>
>>222616717
My theory generally is that a big problem of recent fantasy, mostly made by millennials who grew up on gaming like League of Legends, is that they lack any kind of transcendent framework or philosophy that has room for the weird or "outside", so there isn't any wonder in their atrocious nu-fantasy steampunk aesthetics, which are all just about representing all of their various little quirky micro-identities.

At least with 70s and 80s fantasy aesthetics, which were schlocky, the artists and writers tended to be nerds and hippies who had actually smoked weed, done LSD out in nature, taken a walk through the woods, listened to prog rock or psychedelic rock or heavy metal, which gave them some second-hand experience with the weird and otherworldly that still translated into the DnD designs and book covers of the 70s and 80s.

The whole vision around fantasy, coming from this lack of insight (or 'out'sight) necessary to evoke that element, seemed to start with Magic the Gathering and then in World of Warcraft & League of Legends. Some key ingredient was suddenly missing, which I think is maybe like a "gap", or sense of the beyond or above or within... suddenly it's just these hulking, garish gaming characters cluttering a town square, all of them Heroes and Champions, their players or readers suddenly more concerned with power levels, metrics, stats, gameplay, points. From that point of view, the immersion in a strange world, or the sense of something ancient or beyond yourself is lost

Not that "good" fantasy aesthetics don't still exist, but they persist more in the metal genre and dungeon synth, or stoner subcultures where there is still a taste for the strange. See also certain niche corners of fantasy and gamer enthusiasts who prefer the older/better mode of fantasy, or people who listen to podcasts like Weird Studies, etc

Is there a reason heroes have christian morality even in sword and sandal? You would never have conan pillage and take slaves for example only villains do this even though in that culture theres nothing immoral about owning slaves and taking women. Not me trying to be edgy either most greek heroes were pro slaves and raping women.
>>
>>222616614
I agree with you in principle. Fantasy as a whole is generally very derivative even outside Sword and Sorcery. Everyone knows what an Orc or a Dwarf is. "Weirdo" fantasy never gets adapted because studios are averse to dating stuff that confuses the audience. And if you want dreamlike, bizarre imagery you're better served watching art films the The Fall (you might like that based on the image you attached) before you'll get that style from a fantasy action flick.
Granted, I'm part of the problem as a stereotypically plebian Warhammer and Metal enjoyer, but I feel like the hand-drawn black and white line art still has some bite to it compared to the focus-grouped fare we see. And something more weird, like Book of the New Sun or whatever the hell, is borderline unadaptable by current Hollywood.
Finally, I also think it's clear that many of the old fantasy authors were raised on history books and traditional mythology, while modern authors were raised on the old fantasy authors, and every generation since imbibed the last generations' fantasy. That's why it's so derivative, copy of a copy syndrome.

Morality is universal, the law of God is writtrn on the tables of our hearts. The Bible just codified it. But it has always been true. Selfishness by definition is not morality, it's cruelty. Cruelty is not heroic. People don't want cruel heroes. Those are the bad guys, by definition. They want heroes which are by definition moral agents, righting wrongs despite great risk to themselves. That is the essence of the fantasy genre. Greek heroes were no different. Hence the term the heroes journey in storytelling. It's based on the biblical stories and the greek mythology which taught a man could rise above his circumstances and learn to be great man, even a hero with courage bravery sacrifice and honor. He came to set the captives free. That was said of Jesus before he was born. A prophecy. And we are free indeed because we know the truth, and that truth is he. Queue music.

You can watch old shows just not anything post-family guy. If you compare old Animaniacs or Tiny Toons to the modern remakes, then it's night and day. And pretty much ALL shows are like this now, both children's cartoons and adult animation.

If anything, Japanese animation still has the old storyboard format and attempting 3D space in 2D worlds.
