Positive by way of a negative quality. He was very naive when in Cairo so he overpaid for EVERYTHING by orders of magnitude. Realistically no one should ever feel a need to make historical figures complicated by going out of their way to talk about how they felt about slavery. It's pure Marxist pseudointellectual nonsense.

The only reason people do it to Western figures like Thomas Jefferson is because they're deliberately building a counter narrative to undermine the legitimacy of our cultural identity.

The fact that Mansa Musa sold slaves has no bearing on his expedition to Egypt, literally the only reason to include it is as a spiteful response to the way leftists bring up the fact Jefferson owned slaves as a sly way to undermine the legitimacy of the US constitution. It's just pure politics.

You're just mad that your little buddy Elon will never, ever surpass Musa.
>>
Mansa Musa became extraordinarily wealthy primarily because he controlled the Mali Empire's gold-producing regions and the trade routes connecting them to North Africa.
Where the money came from
Gold: Mali controlled or dominated access to major West African goldfields, particularly around Bambuk and Boure. Gold was abundant enough that Mali became one of the major suppliers of gold to the Mediterranean world.
Salt: The empire also controlled important salt-producing areas, especially Taghaza in the Sahara. Salt was extremely valuable in West Africa and was traded for gold and other goods.
Trade taxes: Mali sat across major trans-Saharan trade routes. Merchants traveling through the empire paid customs duties and taxes, providing the state with another huge source of revenue.
Imperial conquest: Mansa Musa inherited an already powerful empire and expanded/maintained control over territories containing valuable resources and major trading cities such as Timbuktu and Gao.
Agriculture: The empire wasn't just a gold economy. The Niger River and surrounding regions supported substantial agriculture, livestock, and cities, giving the state a large productive base.

>Theres a shit ton of historical evidence.
There are two Arab accounts, one was written hundreds of years after he existed. Both were also racist and essentially were calling him a dumb nigger doing the medieval equivalent of buying a hellcat when you're dodging your rent payments. There is also Malian oral history that mentions him once. That also calls him a dumb nigger for spending all their money, and considers him one of Mali's worst rules.

There's also no evidence of Mamluk currency being inflated as a result of his visit, and Mamluk currency inflation is actually a well documented historical field, unlike Mansa Musa. There's also the claim that he spent all this money building mosques, but no one can name a mosque in Egypt that was built by him.

Redditors will scoff at Jesus being the Son of God but the historical evidence for that is both more numerous and reliable than the evidence that Mansa Musa even existed, let alone was the richest man in the world.

Crash Course World History and it's consequences have been a disaster for the human race.
>>
>>222617854
There's no evidence for any of the absurd Mansa Musa claims. Everything about him is from 3rd hand accounts. The first thing written about him is from a semi-fiction book and the information was from a guy that heard something from his grandfather 50 years after it happened. That is how credible the Mansa Musa story is.

It's really funny that you guys are so butthurt about the idea of a black guy who ruled a place with lots of gold mines being rich by the standards of places without many gold mines but that still used gold as currency.

People are bitching because it’s going to be another revisionist pro-nigger slop like the woman Kangz and hidden figures movie. Mansa Musa is a fictional figure invented by kikes in the early 20th century to give niggers some sense of pride. The genesis of that idea was some nigger tribe leader who was one of the biggest slave traders in West Africa during the colonial era.

Niggers are so stupid that they genuinely believe that Zamunda and Wakanda are real places. My aunt owns a travel agency and she opened a branch in Chicago a decade ago and she loves to tell the story of how many stupid nigger inquiries about Wakanda her employees have to hear after Black Panther came out.

This could be fun. Make it a comedy. Some rare, extremely rich, black dude ruining the "industry" and economy of various African countries in whimsical ways as he makes his way to Mekka.

Dudes one of the worst leaders ever. He was fortunate enough that his kingdom had a productive gold mine. Instead of spending that gold to improve his kingdom he decides to save it all so he can give it all away on his journey to mecca. Imagine living in some shitty hut while watching your leader donate all his gold so he can look impressive to the arabs.

You have no concept of value so you wouldn't care. It is just a shiny rock to you.

>richest man in history
There has never been any concrete data on this fact by the way.

It's known he was the ruler of the Mali Empire and controlled a lot of gold, but it's never actually stated in correctly in any historical texts and everything comes from like 10th hand account from dozens of different sources. Nothing is ever explicitly writ down. What is known is that he was notoriously bad with what money he had. He crashed the value of gold in Cairo, which lasted over 12 years and he was forced to buy back all of that gold to help stabilize the currency because his own wealth was flatlining because of it. And no Historian has ever been able to accurately guess his wealth. Even the highest end numbers, even if you adjust for inflation put it at 400 billion, which is lower than names like Elon Musk. If we're talking about organizations because Mansa Musa was essentially an organization being the leader of an empire, then the East India Company is estimated wealth is well over 7 trillion.

It should also be known he was the biggest African slave trader at his time of rule.

You were doing so well before this. No proof of this ever happened. There are records of gold value from this time and we see little change from his adventure.

i think there is more emphasis on the fact that he destabilized the mediterranean than there should be, most of those towns were shit poor
if he went and buttfucked venice around that time i would be more inclined to believe he was the richest man to ever live relative to his peers

There's a medieval map from Spain that had a picture of him saying "Mansa Musa - the richest man in the region" and eventually pop history fags turned 'region' into 'world' because they need to throw black people a bone.

There is more evidence of his visit to Cairo than his claims of wealth, which I'll admit isn't much at all. Which should only raise more suspicions of his claims of being the richest man in the world. This is from Syrian scholar Shihab al-Din al-Umari writing around 12 years after his (Mansa's) pilgrimage.
>“This man flooded Cairo with his benefactions… They exchanged gold until they depressed its value in Egypt and caused its price to fall… Gold was at a high price in Egypt until they came in that year. The mithqal did not go below 25 dirhams and was generally above, but from that time its value fell and it cheapened in price and has remained cheap till now. The mithqal does not exceed 22 dirhams or less. This has been the state of affairs for about twelve years… by reason of the large amount of gold which they brought into Egypt and spent there.”
I will admit there is contention over this fact, but again, this is the closest thing we have to a first hand account. Literally every other bit of written information we have on Mansa's wealth or spending comes from dozens of different people and constantly changing hands.
