Otomo's Akira manga has a fairly serious tone, and has at least pretentions of being more than pulp entertainment. So people assumed that Ghost in the Shell was similar. It wasn't since it's a fun filled "pulp" comic.

And she juuuuust so happens to get an art style change to more closely resemble Sakura (even though Patlabor already had a Sakura clone!). Nagumo and Goto funny enough are based on Ataru's parents, which gives context to what Patlabor is. Ghost in the Shell does pick up on some themes of the mango, and some plot points, but it is just Oshii again doing his own thing, with the same protagonist from his past films again.

Its less fun and loses a lot of the grim but goofy tone of the original OVA that made it so unique. Leona is more of a bitch to which kinda sucks, I liked her juxtaposition with the rest of the crew as being kinda an innocent sweetheart vs everyone else being some kind of psychotic hard ass to a certain degree. The cat girls are also more involved in the original as well. Overall it had way more of a "we're all fucked but let's at least have fun and enjoy what we are doing" kinda vibe that worked so well with the dystopian setting

Part of the journey is plowing through the beginning only to later realize how foundational it all was to the entire story. A lot of characters that seem like silly, throw-away, one-off characters in the beginning come back to be extremely relevant later on. You don't need to watch it now, you can go off and watch a few hundred other anime and have fun with them, but at the bottom of the glass, One Piece is there waiting for you.
