When you watch the outtakes you'll hear Neal Brennan in the background directing a lot of the sketches. Neal and Dave were a writing team, and in season 2, Neal started to direct more of the sketches. Imo, Dave became jealous of the influence Neal had in the show, and that's what contributed to him leaving after season 2.
