I will say the same when a ML does this with 2 FLs. One of the worst offenders is the ML in Do It All Your Way 2002. The only difference is both women knew about the other. He royally pissed me off even though both women accepted it. When kdramas were more ML centric with revolving females it was as distasteful especially when the MLs were abusive and selfish "players".

This show is the perfect specimen for subtitle analysis because there are three distinct English subtitles being released simultaneously, from Viki, Amazon, and HBO Max. The Amazon release also has Korean softsubs which makes things even easier, usually you have to OCR hardcoded Korean subtitles from some HDTV release.

Before even looking at any of the subtitles my assumption that the Viki subs would be the best was based on the fact that this show is specifically about fandom, and who better to subtitle a show about fandom than people literally part of Hallyu fandom (kdrama fansubbing). And it turns out I was correct.

The "Ctrl+f oppa" experiment:
HBO Max English subtitles: 0 results
Amazon English subtitles: 0 results
Viki English subtitles: 12 results

Now I know what my detractors are likely to say, oh you're just fetishizing untranslated words that's not how translation should work. First of all anyone watching a show called My Bias, My Boss in Dangi 4359 knows what oppa means. Second of all I'd be more fine with oppa erasure if they just did a better job, but look at this absolute disaster from the Amazon subtitles:

My only oppa related complain with the Viki subtitles is they've been rendering it as Oppa Chan, the order is messed up it's not said that way in Korean or English, it should be Chan Oppa. Oppa Chan makes it sound like it's Japanese.

Two certified kdrama moments (the umbrella scene, the ending scene where Da-reum saves Ha-gi from an incoming motorcycle (the white truck of narrow alleys)), what's not to like?

I always forget that for most people shows are region locked to certain platforms. That's another thing I miss about fansubs, they were functionally regionless so everyone watching whatever show were getting the same experience. Now people in three separate parts of the world are getting wildly different subtitles for this show, you can't even expect people to know characters by the same name anymore because two different platforms could romanize the Korean in different ways. (Looking at you MyDramaList for spelling her name Du Na when literally all of the official promotional material and subtitles use Doona.)
Anyway, if anyone else is curious this show is being globally distributed by three different platforms:

Viki - Americas, Europe, Oceania, MENA
HBO Max - 18 Asia-Pacific Countries
Amazon - India

So at least the damage being done by HBO Max isn't as bad as it could be. Still, the fact that they make the translation choices I'm about to show for the region of the world that probably has one of the strongest and oldest Hallyu fandoms makes them all the more baffling.

The Amazon subtitles are a relative middle ground, but the HBO Max subtitles are translating Korean fandom language into generic English.
