I feel ambivalent about the examination of the holodeck in Hollow Pursuits. On the one hand it's a fairly prescient take on things like AI image generation and even the incel phenomenon, but the problem is that it's as if these problems are being discovered for the first time with one freaky guy on one ship, when realistically there would have already been petabytes of discourse about it through Federation society as soon as holodecks became widely available (even granting that these issues would only come to a head with holodecks, and not 300 years earlier as they have in reality). The reaction should be "Oh God, he's another one of those holodeck freaks" and not, "Oh my God, what is that freak doing on the holodeck?"An example of this problem in a different context - of the show being "smart" from the viewer's perspective, but "dumb" from its own perspective for taking so long to figure something out - is the Picard maneuver. As a sci-fi fan you think "Oh, that's a really cool idea, using warp drive to create two light images to confuse your opponent!", but in-universe it's one of the first things you would think to do when fighting in an FTL ship and it's retarded that it would take 250 years after the invention of warp (or even longer if you count other warp-capable races) for it to occur to somebody.

Trekkies overstate how ideologically monolithic Star Trek as a franchise is. Whilst yes, the federation and the overall themes of most stories are obviously sympathetic towards a progressive liberal world view, there are plenty of examples of the franchise humanizing individuals and groups with world views that clash with them. There are plenty of characters that we are meant to sympathize with that you could argue are on the right side of the spectrum. Worf, despite being a star fleet officer, occasionally displays some pretty socially conservative views. Kira is a Bajoran nationalist who was originally going to lend her support to the religious fundamentalist Kai Winn. Garak regularly expresses his admiration and nostalgia for the fascist Cardassian empire. And there’s of course the running joke within the fandom of Odo having fascistic tendencies. These characters aren’t portrayed as cookie cutter bad guys, and in some cases their views are presented as deserving of constructive engagement. Lets not forget the numerous times the franchise has criticized the federation, despite its seemingly progressive and enlightened world view, characters in universe call out how the federation can often be discriminatory and xenophobic in its own way. There’s even an argument to be made that the UFP engages in its own form of soft imperialism. My point being, the franchise isn’t as cut and dry as many people make it out to seem, we are constantly shown stories where there isn’t a clear good guy, its not always as simple as “the good progressive federation vs the evil conservative bigots.” Plus, I’m sure there have been plenty of writers and creatives who have worked on the franchise who didn’t identify as progressives.

Throw out everything after ENT. Make multiple small 1-2 season series filling out the post DS9-VOY world. Focus on the civilizations themselves and how they conflict after the Dominion is gone. For example, a show about Cardassian reconstruction, a show about Romulans fighting Spock's reform movement, a show about Klingons being Klingons, etc. Get rid of the lens flares and shiny metal, biege and carpet looked more "liveable". After a few years of this, make a new flagship series which ties together some of the plotlines and maybe puts characters from the shows on a starfleet ship (Romulan starfleet officers/petty officers who escaped as defectors with Spock's help?). Ideally, the flagship would go back to the delta quadrant. I'm fond of how STO handled it, by making more dyson spheres, say they were built by the iconians, and slap a ship-sized gateway on them. Also, after ENT, make a show about what ENT should have been. Show how the different civilizations learn to cooperate and eventually form the federation.

Just watched the TOS episode with the Kelvans that hijack the Enterprise and take it out of the Galaxy. I’m wondering why their cooperation with the federation doesn’t completely reshape the entire galaxy around their technology. With the ease at which they modified the Enterprise to survive their trip to the Andromeda galaxy, this should launch the federation hundreds or thousands of years ahead technologically and completely render the Romulan and Klingon Empires harmless. Is there an actual in universe explanation on why this doesn’t happen, or is this just something I’m supposed forget after a while because they didn’t worry about continuity yet?
