Just because it sold a ton of records does not make it mainstream slop and you suck at judging art if you don't now that. Dark Side is exceptionally well executed outsider art that miraculously broke through to the mainstream, probably as a result of both the sheer amount of work that went into fine-tuning every detail of it and how it offered something that people subconsciously wanted at the time but wasn't being provided anywhere else.

The Godfather would be something by the Velvet Underground - probably the debut.

Also, the Dark Side of the Moon isn't even that overrated. It's a rare case of an album of that quality getting the praise that it deserves. I'd say it's appropriately rated for the most part, possibly slightly overrated at worst just on the grounds that it's not the best album of its genre.

Revenge of the Sith.

The Gilmour-led era is the musical equivalent to the Star Wars prequels, and the kind of people who like the Division Bell are the same kind of people who like Revenge of the Sith.
>>
>>222687014
I don't agree just because I'm Thinking of Ending Things doesn't betray Kaufman's strengths and sensibilities the way the Final Cut does Pink Floyd's. If we're just talking Pink Floyd albums, it would be something that stands up better against their other work. I said Wish You Were Here earlier, but to reach outside of the classic lineup that made the famous albums that everyone knows and loves, the closest comparison to I'm Thinking of Ending Things would probably be a Saucerful of Secrets. I still think Wish You Were Here is the best comparison though, not just in mood but also structure.

what kind is that? its a little ambigous
some people love both of them for stupid and good reason
but i generally only see crusty old heads hating on them.

This is like calling Nirvana outsider music
Pink Floyd post-Barret did nothing but hop on trends established by others

>Kel, boomers are delusional

>This is like calling Nirvana outsider music
No, it isn't. Pink Floyd's music of the 1970's still sounds fresher and more modern than Nirvana today. Their music was grim and nihilistic on one hand while ethereal and subdued on the other, which combined resulted in music that sounded completely unlike anything else that was coming out at the time, even from other progressive rock bands. In a time when young men were being forced to fight and die in an illegal war and people were living under the threat of nuclear war, their music - particularly on the Dark Side of the Moon - was more applicable than anything from bands like Creedence or CSN. Dark Side stands out especially because of that ethereal, left-field nihilism was so polished and fine-tuned. This was a seasoned rock and roll band presenting a sound that no one else was doing or even really trying to emulate yet because they were still underground prior to its release, in a way that was now fully fleshed-out.
>Pink Floyd post-Barret did nothing but hop on trends established by others
Their music was so far outside of anything else that was being done at the time that I can't stress how wrong you are. Like I said, even the biggest progressive rock bands weren't doing this unique, subdued style that they created. They were the kings of transitions both within and between songs, and that grim nihilism and otherworldly, ethereal sound was so different that no one really even tried to emulate it until around the time that post rock came into existence well over a decade later. When Barrett was leading the band, you could at least compare their sound to the dozens of other psychedelic rock bands that released their debut in the six months following Sgt. Pepper.
