He's good at developing characters over 800 pages, making him something like "Dickens, but spooky," so I suppose he has that going for him. I've read about a dozen of his novels, and they were all fine reads. But they aren't high art by any means. His novels are essentially pulp. Now, of course, it's easy to imagine you are saying "I like Stephen King because I do not read any other books," just as it's easy to understand if you mean "I like Stephen King because I like horror, which is a genre of speculative fiction, and thus should be handled with less scrutiny than more 'serious' artworks." My problem isn't that you enjoy King. I enjoy King sometimes. I'm reading his son's latest novel right now. But to call King "good" is a slippery slope, and to say he's "the best" at anything beyond making money from people who buy books at airports is just absurd.I need to take my copy of The Stand down from my attic and finally read it this October.
