I just watched this film and I need to say it's a masterpiece 7 out of 7
Am I the only one who got surprised when the samurai raided the hideout and the bandits had firearms?
The fact Kyuzo, the idealised version of a samurai, was killed by a gunshot was such a nice touch too.
>>
OP here, I'm also trans if that matters

More like 3/7 LMAO!!!!
>>
>>222728626
It's pretty great.
The only bad-ish thing about it is when you decide to rewatch it and then you remember how much of the first half of it is villagers crying and build-up for the second half.
>>
>>222728626
It’s good. Would have been better split into two movies though. As others have said, trying to carry the heroic theme all the way through is very tough and the subplots regarding the farmers and villagers are spedrun so as not to distract.

IMO The Hidden Fortress did it better by not introducing the heroic plot until the silliness and helplessness had been fully explored.

>villagers crying
But that's my favourite genre.

Also the part where the young samurai gives the villages money for rice and the part where the old samurai accepts the request and take his bowl of rice makes me tear up. I might have a thing for rice idk.
>>
>>222729296
It's funny because it's a 3:30 movie that feels like 20 minutes
but I fear It's going to be a slog during a rewatch
>>
>>222729422
I've rewatched it a bunch and I love it every time. Keep in mind I may be autistic.

Kino.

High and Low is so fucking good. If there’s one movie that I think any Westerner would like, it’s this.
>>
>>222729542
I also enjoyed The Bad Sleep Well. Both are rather Hitchcockian contemporary crime thrillers.

10/10 movie when I saw this movie a few years ago I felt so happy. It really sucks you in, iirc it was like close to 3 hours long and it never felt too long. I just wish people would watch the lesser known Kurosawa films too like The Quiet Duel etc.
>>
Sansho the Bailiff and Seven Samurai are gateway drugs, be careful
soon you guys will be into Madadayo, The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum, or even literature

Sansho isn't talked about enough on here. Beautiful film

I love older Jidai Geki movies and I would have gotten in to them anyways but the first one I saw was Rashomon and man Kurosawa is just on another level. His films really are gateway drugs in to the wonderful world of Japanese cinema.

Anyone know what movie this is from? I can't find any info on it but I want to watch it.
Nobody I ask has the sauce.

God I haven't touched a boob in over 10 years.

Check the book.
The description of the samurai seeing the peeling paint of the portal while thinking about life is so fucking cool
its difficult to describe it, but its just a lost man in a difficult time
>>
>>222729518
Are there any other good Japanese police procedural movies? I guess Japanese ones focus more on the investigation than the action
>>
>>222729296
The second half is so good because it takes the time to do characterisation and set everything up properly in the first half.
>>
>>222731274
off the top of my head I can't think of anything but Mosquito on The Tenth Floor is about a police officer and you might like it. And Nora Inu by Kurosawa is kind of about a police investigation I guess but it's more on the action side. Live Today, Die Tomorrow is about the life of a serial killer and has some investigative police work, especially in the later half. It's also based on a true story.
>>
>>222730991
looks interesting but sorry anon can't place any of the actors. If someone could recognize one of the actors, you could look at their IMDB profile and find the movie like that I suppose.
>>
More like the 6 ronin and a larper

Anon actually makes relevant point
No comeback
PWNED
>>
how has Asia failed to produced another actor like Mifune?
>>
>>222728626
I've seen this movie three times and don't find the first half to be long if you put a decent amount of time between rewatches. My favorite Japanese/samurai film, however, is Harakiri. One of the best movies in general.
