Did you like Episode 1 at the time?

No. I was seven at the time.

i remember everyone saying it was terrible when it came out, but can't remember my own opinion at the time.
>>

Of course. I loved it, just like I do now.
>>

this was good, but the opening of revenge was amazing, remains one of my best theater experiences
>>
>>222738470
Yes I was 12
Duel of the Faiths still is one of the greatest movie tracks ever made
Also the entire duel with Maul /Obi-Wan, it was last day of filming and George Lucas was not on set and the stunt coordinators just went ham
>>
>>222738470
I was ten or eleven when it came out. Saw it three times in theaters. I loved Starwars and liked being wrapped up in the hype, but even then I was very mixed on it. The overall craft and certain individual parts of the movie were masterfully executed, but the overall package was frustratingly uneven.
Still my favorite of the prequels, for whatever that's worth.

Oh yeah, definitely. I was 11 years old I think. My parents gifted me a cassette of the soundtrack when I graduated from the 5th grade and played the shit out of that thing. I had been a big Star Wars nerd, absolutely loved Shadows of the Empire and Rogue Squadron on the N64. Battlefront was just a year or two away iirc. Had two separate editions of the original trilogy on VHS. After some time though, I grew up (a little) and lost the connection to the franchise. I still love some aspects of SQW, especially the vehicles, but any time I see some movie or series announcement, I just let it pass me by. I'm not drawn to it so much and even the "good" stuff (like Andor) just hasn't enticed me.
>>
I was 9 when it came out and I remember thinking it was mostly boring outside of the pod race and the lightsaber fight at the end. All of the standing around yapping about politics sucked. Anakin was annoying and I couldn't relate to what a whiner he was. Jar Jar stepping in poop and smelling stinky farts was stuff for babies to laugh at.
>>
Yes and I liked it even more after Episode II came out and it was worse.
>>
RLM are retarded gen x faggots. The prequels were made for millennials
>>
I remember really liking the pod racing scene and the duel of fates song.
Everything else? Not so much.

It would have been a great movie if George Lucas had just cut out all the childish shit. I don't even mind Jar Jar acting all goofy during the battle of Naboo, but some of that stuff is so immature that you would think it was left in on accident. It's like a great movie with a bad movie edited in. It's too bad, because I feel like it altered the way people saw the other prequels. If it had just been edited better, it would have easily been on-par with the original trilogy, if not better. When it's on, it's really fucking on. I don't even mind the political stuff, George Lucas was right to include that, and people only hate it because they're told to by people who already hate the movie for other, more damning aspects of it.
>>
>>222738518
I thought it was the greatest shit ever at the time. I was five, mind you, but the only thing I didn't like about it was Jar Jar, because I thought that he was going to be a villain based off of how he looked.
>>
My mom's favorite character was Watto and she kept his little toy in her car. I have no idea why.
>>
>>222738470
Yes. I loved it when I was 8. Still love it at 35.

RLM lost.
>>
>>222739665

>>
>>222738470
Yes. I seriously did not get the hate. It had Liam Neeson being awesome, Darth Maul being cool and it was fucking Star wars. Jar jar was annoying, but so fucking what? Anakin was an awful kid actor? So was hammil in episode 4.Now, episode 2? That was the worst one. Man that sucked.
>>

>>222739700
>Now, episode 2? That was the worst one. Man that sucked.
This take blows my mind because I think it's the best prequel by a large margin. The space-noir vibe is cool, it has probably the best action sequences in any Star Wars film, and it has none of the problems that episodes I and III had. The worst thing about it is the stiff dialogue, but it makes up for it in other ways. The last hour and a half of that film is peak Star Wars. When the clone wars break out at the end, it feels so ominous. I'll never forget going to see that the day after it came out when I was a few weeks shy of turning eight. I thought it was the greatest shit ever.
>>
>>222739709
Yeah, the non-extended, theatrical version of the pod race really is better. I have no idea why George Lucas thought it was suddenly necessary to include absolutely everything, even when it breaks the flow. The man has no quality control.
>>
>at the time
No, I did not. I went in expecting a film that respected its young audience enough to give it challenging, dark themes. Instead, I received a full-blown children's movie, replete with alien racial stereotypes as comic relief.
>>
>>222738470
I was 12 and I remember seeing it a few days after release so only a couple people had costumes. Loved the movie at the time because it finished strong with Maul, but even once it came out on video everyone realized it was way more bad than good. The merch was incredible though.

>>222739820
On second thought, I suppose the dense discussions of intergalactic trade and tax policies were meant to represent the challenging themes. While that's laudable, there is no human drama in it, like there was in Empire Strikes back. My name is actually Luke, and I can't tell you how many times people said "Luke, I am your father" to me growing up.
>>
>>222738470

Even by today's standards, I can't believe the level of marketing this movie had. I remember getting picrel with a Pizza Hut order before the movie came out and wondering what a groundbreaking new character this Gunray fellow would be and what part he played in the run-up to the Empire's creation. Holy shit, imagine this guy having your back, or worse, having to face him as a foe...
>>
>>222739787
To me, its greatest sin was that it was fucking boring. It's like two and a half hours long, it's got ninja yoda, it's got Dracula and four armed lightsaber wielding robots. How the fuck did you manage to make it boring with politics and dull as shit clone story?
>>
>>222738470
Yeah but I was 8 when it came out
As I grew up I can recognize its a terrible movie even if I personally like it and am Nostalgic for it. The same way I liked the 1998 Godzilla movie when it came out.
>>
Not really no, I was like 5
>>
Yes, RLM didn't brainwash me as a 12 year old to hate them until 2007 or whenever that first RLM video came out and then I hated them. Social media didn't exist back then, I was a kid, I thought it was cool, I liked attack of the clones and RotS as well, all of them. Then I discovered RLM and they told me what to think and I was dumb enough to fall for it.

I'm not saying these movies are great, fuck no. Even as a 40 year old now there's plenty of criticisms for the prequels many of them very valid, but they are not that bad, there is still some enjoyment to be found with them, and compared to what Star Wars is now, they are far better than the absolute disaster that has been Disney Star Wars outside of Andor.

I think at the time I assumed I was too dumb to understand the basics of the conflict, but at the end of the day I liked the podrace, I liked the designs of the ships and shit, and the duel of the fates was pretty hype.

Jar Jar, the farting alien, a lot of the stuff with the Gungans, Anakin building C-3P0. But you're right in that a lot of it, like the clip you posted, is great. It's like watching a great movie and a shitty movie edited together into one shitshow of a film.

I was almost five and I didn't go to see it with my dad on the opening weekend because I thought that Jar Jar was nightmare fuel. My dad had preordered the tickets and I chickened out so he took a friend and went without me. It took me about a week to gather up the courage and face that terrifying, hideous monster and finally see it in the theater. It instantly became my favorite movie at the time, but it had nothing to do with Jar Jar. I actually felt let down by the fact that he wasn't supposed to be scary or a villain, after I went through all that.

Geezeranon who watched the first star wars movies on release and have no idea about what weird podcasters you guys watch.

On release I was disappointed, but still thought it was pretty good. Just not up to the legends the first 3 were. .

Great parts:
Podracing
The Duel of the Fates.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYFIHUJTjMU
Qui Gong
Obi Wan.

Weak parts:
Anything with gungans.
The trade federation weren't compelling
Jar Jar.
The marketing carpetbombing. Weird seeing Anakin shit for kids, knowing he's going to go Vader.
Parts felt too deriviative.
Anakin needed fewer scenes, but with more human factor.
Droids weren't really a compelling enemy.

Shit I appreciate more now.
Padime's outfits.
Killing Darth Maul was a mistake. The prequel trillogy could have used more of him.
They should have gone with darth Jar Jar.
They needed SOME ongoing consistency with the villians, beyond the Emperor.
There were some cool droids.
I think my expectations were just too high in retrospect.
>>
I thought it was okay, but not as good as the first trilogy or the fifth element. The real deception was the third one, which was "just another movie." It didn't live up to the hype at all.

I was 12, a gigantic Star wars nerd )trivia, card game, read all the books) and had opening night tickets, wearing my ep 1 T-shirt

I walked out completely disillusioned and was it was never the same. The movie was trash, bad dialogue, stupid humor, completely incompatible with the original trilogy (oh yeah vader totally made c3po as a kid). what a shit movie. Anyone that thinks it was good or has rose colored glasses on is an idiot.

The only thing worse are the sequels, the prequels at least had some heart to them as bad as they were.

Admittedly, as a kid, I didn't have any problem with Anakin building C3P0. My dumb kid brain just goes, "Well, they were in the originals, they should be here too!"

Now as an adult, it is face-palmingly stupid, and one thing that I agree with Disney for softly retconning.

>>222751857

They avoid any mention of it outside of any "canon history" booklets for autists.

Marvel’s Star Wars (2015) #26, published in 2016 and part of the new canon. C-3PO is captured by SCAR Squadron and literally brought before Darth Vader. The troopers complain about the droid; Vader dismisses Threepio as useless junk and orders them to dispose of him. Zero mention of him building him, zero reference to the fact, zero dialogue or glaring looks that suggest a passing familiarity.

>>222749739
Hard to say. Culture is fracturing into smaller pieces. It's harder to have a big, centralized cultural event. I think we will.
>>
Star Wars was a one-off event, the way that the introduction of motion pictures was disruptive for the still art painting scene. When Star Wars first burst on the scene, people had heretofore never seen anything like it. Imagine is Star Wars were first screened in the age of talkies, or even earlier, in the age of Buster Keaton and silent films. People would have sharted themselves right in the cinema. Just like the introduction of a new technology, it can only be introduced once. The introducer, George Lucas, has been riding his own coattails all along, right to the bank. He fooled megalocorporations like Disney into thinking there was any more value stored within his storied, yet intellectually spent, intellectual property. For having done so, he is truly the greatest genius that has ever lived.

No. I realized as I was watching it that I hated it. I hated the kids stupid fucking face. I hated the terrible CGI. I hated the incredibly boring plot. I used to think the only redeeming part of episode 1 (and the entire prequels) was the Darth Maul fight. I watch it again a few years and I realized I hated that most of all. I hated how they turned space monks who had mysterious powers but were still basically 'human' into unstoppable ninjas who could jump 500 feet in the air, run a million miles a second and were just made to twirl around with glowsticks nonstop. Really seemed to sap the mystery out of them and reduce them to generic superheroes.

46 year old here.
We were in college and got half drunk and went to a 1:00 a.m. showing one of the first few days it was out. Yeah, it was pretty cool the first time because of the special effects and the fact that Star Wars was BACK. But it was also kind of a letdown compared to the oridge tridge. The tone at times with the senate bullshit and Jar Jar really left a bad taste in your mouth. I had no interest in seeing it again but I was of course going to see the next ones. Lucas just hits you over the head with so much eye candy you don't really think about it until later. You just don't articulate why it sucks.
That's why the Plinkett reviews were so cathartic for many of us. He broke down exactly why they were not great and often bad movies.
But yeah, I liked Episode one at the time I was in the theater watching it. For sure.

>Really seemed to sap the mystery out of them and reduce them to generic superheroes.
Different experience. I grew up with the three box vhs that out before the "enhanced" re-releases, and saw Ep 1 day it came out.
Seeing the magic ninja Jedi was an interesting contrast to the old man masters and the ignorant rookie of the classics. It showed Jedi at their peak performance, what they were like in a more elegant age. The performance may not have been the best, and i could even agree to the timeline being wonky (to go from Ep 1 levels to Ep 4 in a single lifetime), but the idea of it was great.
>I used to think the only redeeming part of episode 1 (and the entire prequels) was the Darth Maul fight.
Naw, best part of Ep 1 was and remains the podracing. Those engines at theater volumes were incredible.

i was confused in 1 but yes i enjoyed both. i didnt really understand people didnt like them until i stumbled uppn the plinkett stuff in like 2010.
i recognize the flaws put forth but there is still a lot of creativity, cool action moments, and genuine attempt to make stories for the sake of stories and not propaganda that still is charming and holds up. better than anything disney ever made with the star wars name

i thought episode 3 was bad and was always surprised people say its the best when its so clearly the worst of the 3

Big design flaws, the top hatch could be obstructed by the main gun. Secondly there is no egress point for the main gunner which makes it a death trap. If the left side legs were taken out the troops may become trapped as all the egress points would be sealed by the body of the AT-TE.

>>
>>222756948
The Ewok hate is complete revisionism. Nobody was complaining about them until around the time the prequels came out, when the myth that people hated them in 1983 was spread. The debate was always whether or not Return of the Jedi was better than the Empire Strikes Back. It's incredible how easy it is to change peoples perception of the past.
>>
>>222738518
I was like 12 when it came out and everyone in my age group generally enjoyed it. That's despite the fact that it was obviously not on the same level as the original trilogy. The jar jar shit was too corny even for middle schoolers but the epic moments more than made up for it. It was just really cool being a kid into Star Wars who missed the original trilogy in theories and getting to experience some of the hype and cultural phenomenon. I am guessing adults at the time would have generally thought it was shit though, and would have been correct. I think I liked it better than attack of the clones a few years later. By then I was old enough to not be easily swayed by the vibes and the soullessness of the CGI really came through in a big way in the follow up.
>>

>>
>>222763165

>>
>>222763326
what needs to be resolved, exactly?
>>
>>222763376
It needs some kind of resolution or payoff so that it doesn't look as retarded as it is. Vader and C-3P0 are in the same room in the Empire Strikes Back and there's no acknowledgement of it. I can't believe I have to explain this to you. You seem like someone would eat his own shit without someone explaining why you shouldn't.
>>
>>222763327
That only proves that the idea was retarded. It was so dumb that George Lucas had to make the decision to have his memory wiped because otherwise it wouldn't make sense, so now it's just this massive plot point that leads nowhere and was ridiculous from the start.

Darth Maul would have made a come back in Lucas' sequels and be the big bad replacing the Emperor, before Disney sidelined him.
>>
>>222763926
But it creates a massive plot point that is never concluded. If you're going to include something as drastic as one main character having created another main character, there has to be some acknowledgement of it so that it doesn't look fucking retarded. C-3P0 and Vader have nothing to do with each other so making Vader essentially C-3P0's father is completely idiotic,

The original trilogy is unmitigated dogshit. Every actor is trash, the costumes and alien designs are trash, the little bear fags (wookies?) fighting and winning against the empire was beyond retarded. When George Lucas brought back Han Solo because he didn't want to lose the toy merch revenue you knew that shit was cooked.

Ep 1 and 2 are the best star wars movies ever, Ep 3 is dog shit.
>>
Notice how everyone saying that they liked it was a child when they saw it

Tells you everything you need to know about Star Wars
>>
>>222749739
No. Kids don't care about the merch anymore. Ep 1 and Jurassic Park are probably the 2 biggest merch events of my life (I was like 6 or 7 when JP came out and then 12-13 when EP1 came out.) The only thing I could ever compare it to was the first Power Rangers run on network TV. The merch from that show was EVERYWHERE in like 93 or 94.

As far as what was biggest though, it had to be Star Wars because their merch footprint was already massive. The toy and model pipelines were saturated, the costume market was tapped, they were flooding every video game medium (including early PC), and those plastic lightsabers were everywhere. Everyone back then had some type of SW merch, mine was the podracing video game which to this day is my favorite racing game.

Because "in theaters" is the phrase that we hear on all the advertisements.

I don't even disagree with you on some of this stuff but you seem easily entertained. I was five when it came out and even I never found Jar Jar funny. People say that kids who were my age at the time were the target demographic for Jar Jar, but I really think that you'd have to be a toddler in order to actually find him funny. Five year olds are above that for the most part. Pandering to children never works because adults are too old to have their finger on the pulse of what kids of certain age groups are actually attracted to. They can't remember how cynical five year olds really are. I see adults talking to kids as if they're babies all the time. They're in the dark when it comes to appealing to kids. Case in point, Jar Jar.

Five year olds aren't babies. It's around that age kids start getting cynical, granted they had smart parents who didn't treat them like babies. You may have been dumb at that age, but that's probably because your parents allowed you to be dumb and you gravitated towards other dumb kids. So really, it's not my problem.

>>
>>222772336
No, it's the best prequel and was hugely underrated. George Lucas obviously listened to the criticism that the Phantom Menace got and took it into consideration in order to make a gritty, moody, mature space noir with great action scenes, and the audience shat on it because they were mad about the Phantom Menace still. The audience is totally in the wrong when it comes to Attack of the Clones.
>>
>>222772386
We just want something that was made by people who care about what they're doing and are interested in creating something new and intriguing even if failing is a risk of that. The prequels were like watching a skateboarder try a crazy stunt and scrape themselves up really badly in the process. That's better than watching someone wobble around on the board and then snap it in half on their knee in frustration like the sequels did.

I was 10 in 1999, so I definitely was a big fan. Not specifically because of Anakin, I was mostly ambivalent about the kid himself, and I don't seem to remember being all that interested in basically any of the plot. But I do really, really remember being super into the pod racers, to the point where I was drawing different ones from the movie and designs for them all the time (I also played the pod racing arcade game at the big...arcade place) and am fairly sure I had the Playstation game.

I also liked Darth Maul a lot. But I think every kid was into picking up a stick and swinging it around like a lightsaber.

my grubby hands on at the time. I was really excited, but watching it felt kind of weird. I was like why did it seem so different? I got the same feeling when I would watch Robotech and going from the Macross Saga to the Masters. This was before I realized they were two different shows spliced together. Kinda similar, back in the day. I was watching YuYu Hakusho, and I stumbled onto a fan fiction site. I was retarded and thought this was genuine info, and it was about how Kurama and Hiei are gay with eachother. I went years with thinking that. Idk how people will ever understand what it was like back then. There was so much misinformation being spread in fandoms.

thats what i mean. the movie itself isn't great looking. it has some colorful shots than when taken out of context and collaged might give the impression of a well-shot movie, but it was a mess. so much of it is early CGI, just whole cloth invented crap and it doesnt look great. it has not aged well. and much of the movie looks boring and pedestrian.
