Also because when I first saw it I was kinda living a life similar to the main characters: living in a big internationally known city, college dropout, rooming w/my high school best friend, working a lame retail job, dressing cool, drinking, smoking cigarettes, shopping at indie stores like Reckless Records, living for the weekend to party make new friends and pick up girls. I couldn’t watch it now, it’d be too painful, as life is so different. Even seeing the main character looking like a grandpa is freaking depressing.

>>222767202In the US big city I posted about above (with the John Simm pic) drugs were everywhere in the "scene" as we called it, and although I abstained my friend/roommate was an absolute drug fiend, one memorable night he dropped acid (as we used to say) smoked dope and got crashing drunk he was blitzed out of his gourd and was amusingly sure he was going to die. Also, because we were relatively attractive (he rather more than me) and young there was an intermingling of classes, despite me being in retail and he being a waiter who did minor tech jobs on the side we'd wind up at some loft party with club kids from NY or LA or hanging with some VIP type who'd get us past the velvet rope of semi-exclusive clubs with Porsches and such in the parking lot or wind up in someone's expensive penthouse apartment or meeting minor celebs or models or people who were connected to or trying to get into TV or movies or pop music. But yeah, some of the nicest people in the nicest places were into drugs, a lot of dope, coke and surprisingly even heroin. There'd be enough coke left in club bathroom sinks that my friend would scrape it together for a "gummy" (putting it across his gums, which I thought was odd). The music was mostly electronic from popular stuff like DM, NO, PSB to techno trance jungle house dub et al. It was wild.

He did for about a year but he stopped after a few incidents including one where one of his coworkers at one of the nice restaurants where he worked bought a dime bag (or maybe a quarter I forget) from him and then complained it had too many stems and seeds, my friend declined to give him more and in the bathroom this guy who my friend described as bald muscular and aggro literally shoved my friend up the wall and threatened to beat the shit out of him (my friend was 6'1 but lanky, had an Irish last name and looked it) and finally said "I'll let it go this time", but the one that made him stop was when one of his sources got arrested, my friend was only dabbling in it like I said to basically smoke (and drop) the profits but he suddenly realized the kind of trouble he could get into for dealing and stopped. This was from around '98-'01 which is why Human Traffic is such a time capsule for me, that whole scene was a wild time in my life
