People 100 years ago really sat through 5 and a half hours of a silent film?

Nah. They had intermissions just like with plays and concerts.
Also you could smoke indoors back then which helped you to relax.
>>
you never went to the Opera? or Ballet, those plays are really long
>>
When /tv/ was a board for white men
that and picture related were considered essential entry level viewings

Movie goers back then would bring cigars, cigarettes, and flasks of gin

They had NOTHING happening, dude. Read "The Jungle", life was dogshit for all of these people. Of course they sat in the theater for 6 hours, it was probably the coolest day of their lives.

No Napoleon movie will ever top Waterloo (1970)

They played on a loop and people would come and go as they pleased. It didn't mattered if you missed the first two hours because the movie would restart once it finished. Hitchcock and Psycho ended this practice.
