To make him seem physically inadequate and nerdy they made Mary Jane's bfs even ludicrously bigger. I grew up with this spiderman which is why I had a hard time relating to skinny manlets like Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. It wasn't just that. They never seemed smart enough or serious enough to be spiderman because of that TAS. He was the template and they filled the role in the live action films with clowns.

Flash, his high school bully, was hanging out with Harry Osborn and Gwen and tried to get his attention while he was deep in thought about Spider-Man shit. Harry thought it was funny, and Gwen was intrigued by his aloof nature. Part of the reason his marriage to Mary Jane was a big deal was because he didn't like her and told her as much, he basically told her to go fuck herself on more than one occasion.
