>I happen to worship these Resident Evil games and pull a lot of inspiration from the experience of playing them. I try to keep the environment changing every seven or eight minutes, like the games. You know, you’re always kind of moving into another level, as it were.
What is Zach Cregger talking about? The Resident Evil games are like the complete opposite of this. This is a very strange thing to be wrong about.
>There’s a lot of items from the games. He’s constantly coming up against these padlocks that are stopping him from progressing. You won’t be able to help but notice some of the healing spray cans and some of the green herbs. You find these typewriters periodically as you’re moving through this world.
Cregger is doing this thing where he keeps the symbols and discards the underlying meaning. It's the symbol (typewriter) without the meaning (failure loops). Anderson wasn't interested in the typewriter. He was interested in the failure loop. What the typewriter symbolized. Dying and waking up to try again.

I'm sure you could do better op

games are a different experience for each person
>>
>>222777102
No, they're not. Resident Evil has a very specific structure. On the original film understood and which this reboot does not.
>>
>>222776534
>The Resident Evil games are like the complete opposite of this
No they aren't. The diversity of rooms and camera angles and the color palette in most of the installments is enormous. You go from grimy basement to grand hall to secret passage to a lab to a fancy wood-clad office to a graveyard, and weirder places.

>Cregger is doing this thing where he keeps the symbols and discards the underlying meaning.
it's RE not the Bible nigga, the underlying meaning isn't sacred
>>
The man never played a Resident Evil game in his life.
>>
>>222776850
Gimme Milla Jovovich and a mansion, and I'll show you what it's like!
>>
>>222776534
>Cregger is doing this thing where he keeps the symbols and discards the underlying meaning
Cargo cult filmmaking, where writers and directors just slap things together in vague imitation of what came before and hope the audience will magically appear for it again.

>The diversity of rooms and camera angles and the color palette in most of the installments is enormous. You go from grimy basement to grand hall to secret passage to a lab to a fancy wood-clad office to a graveyard, and weirder places.
That's not what he's talking about. Cregger's film is complely linear. It has no backtracking or interconnected spaces or unlocking new paths or anything. Resident Evil was never about running non-stop in a straight line for 90 minutes.
>>
>>222776534
>Inspiration
Anon no one cares about epic resident evil knock-off game.
>>
I saw the new trailer that is literally just showing that one scene has a can of healing spray in the background and another scene has a green herb in the background. It really does feel like a cargo cult. The old movies tried to invent new stuff that felt like it belonged. I remember one movie had this synthetic skin Umbrella used for major wounds that the villain applies to his severed hand. You could see this being an Umbrella product. But this movie is just like here's literally the spraycan from the games. No, it plays no role in the story. Look, look, a typewriter. He gets it, senpai. He's locked in.
>>
>>222777506
you set absurd standards for the movie (a movie needs to have BACKTRACKING because the game does?) and now you're acting like it's a failure of the movie that it didn't meet them.
I don't really want to engage with this level of contrarian brainrot, sorry.
>>
>>222777605
Cregger claims his film is an A to B journey because RE games are like that. They are not. He's making excuses for the fact this is a Shay Hatten script that originally had no relation to Resident Evil. The A to B chase through a series of escalating set pieces is a Hatten trademark. See John Wick 4.

A to B is like a very broad stroke if you step back like 20 steps and look at it.
>Mansion to Cabin to Underground Lab (ignore that you go through the mansion again)
I skimmed the script. It's very obviously repurposed. I don't think it's a good story of a man overcoming adversity of the unrelenting undead outbreak (a BIOHAZARD if you will) and instead ruins him in a far too literal way for no true payoff (saving a BIOHZARD daughter for example). It's just a tragedy when I don't think that's what the series is built on.

if there's one thing resident evil games don't have is a fixed structure
>>
Can't say that I loved Weapons, but it was interesting enough for me that I'm curious to see what this will be like. Really crappy choice of music for the final trailer, but the others were much better.
The most baffling thing I see is actually people bashing this one in favour of the other movies when ALL OF THEM save for arguably the first one were complete shit that raped the games in any possible way and were objectively bad even regardless of that.
>>
>>222777806
Not so much a fixed structure as a set of structures. That's why RE: Requiem and RE: The Final Chapter are so structurally similar. They recognizably share not just story beats but structural ideas around the recontextualization of familiar environments. The safe made hostile, the familiar made new. It's the same reason why almost all of the RE games follow the same "repression of the individual" core story theme that the movies use. RE4 and RE7 have the same story concept. So does RE8. And so does RE9 because it revolves around the mind control storyline from RE Extinction.
>>
>>222776534
>watch the trailer
>hear the word "fuck"
This guy doesn't understand Resident Evil or Japan. I only played the older Resident Evils.
>>
>>222777726
There is a slender chance the ending has been changed, but I doubt it. The ending is the biggest problem because it is nothing like an RE ending thematically.
>>
>>222776534
Does this movie even refer to the Umbrella Corporation or T-Virus?

>hear the word "fuck"
All modern RE games (those built in the RE Engine) are laced with profanity, most of the time unnecessary. But if you look at the writing credits, it makes sense. They're all written by Westerners.
>>
>>222777900
Umbrella are in the film, but they're not an evil corporation, they don't control Raccoon City. The script doesn't have the t-virus. The final film might, but it behaves nothing like any version of the virus from the games or previous films, and is basically just this thing that makes organisms mutate rapidly into tentacle monsters.

Weirdly, the anti-virus is a green liquid. This is not from the games. The green anti-virus is a film invention. It's why you never see any of the games feature a vial of green liquid that cures the t-virus because that concept belongs to the films.
>>
>>222777931
A lot of fans don't want to admit it, but Capcom heavily reoriented RE's tone to be more like the movies, especially Apocalypse. Jill is all fuck fuck fuckity fuck because that's how she was in the movie.
>>
>>222777506
> It has no backtracking or interconnected spaces or unlocking new paths or anything.
I feel like you're joking. But also, you are literally describing Barbarian.
>>
>>222778026
Barbarian has the characters visiting the same location (the house) over and over again. The house is an interconnected space that reveals new locations (the basement). Barbarian is notably RE-like in ways that the RE film Cregger has made are not.
>>
>>222778026
I'm not joking at all. This movie is literally the character running from one set piece to the next. Its overall structure does not resemble the games at all. https://web.archive.org/web/20260405161354/https://www.scribd.com/document/1011210193/RESIDENT-EVIL-Zach-Creggers-Shay-Hattin

It's a little bit like RE: The Final Chapter which had Alice racing against time to reach the cure as she progressed through a series of ambushes and set pieces. But that film used the idea of revisiting locations from previous films in a new context. It's very RE game-like, or maybe even Dead Space 2-like. This doesn't have that layering. It's Bryan running from one location to the next. There are no puzzles. There are no cases where he has to double back to unlock a new path or something like that. It feels like a completely random horror movie that had the RE brand put on it, and it's very strange. The structure is not bad. But Cregger acting like the movie is "like the games" is a very strange insistence.
>>
the only structural pattern you can see across all resident evil games are the big mansion, the limited ammo, the puzzles and the hidden laboratories, which all seem to be present in this new film
>>
>>222777958
>Capcom heavily reoriented RE's tone to be more like the movies
Not the first time they've drawn influence from the films
>Laser grid hallway in the first film -> RE4
>Red Queen -> Umbrella Chronicles
>Return to Raccoon City in The Final Chapter -> Requiem
>>
>>222778093
>There are no puzzles. There are no cases where he has to double back to unlock a new path or something like that.
there literally is
https://www.ign.com/videos/the-resident-evil-movie-has-puzzles
you're so quick to judge a film that hasn't even come out yet
>>
>>222778115
Dont bother, the “resident evil fans” just want pure fanservice and their animu tier named protagonists like leon running around quipping like a marvel movie. Thats what they really mean by not structurally like the games
>>
>>222778115
Except 4, which had you detour through an old Europran castle for some reason

>not just using george romero's script
>>

A senior moment, perhaps?
>>
>>222778115
>which all seem to be present in this new film
What are you talking about? There's no mansion, no puzzles, and no hidden lab.
>>
>>222778162
The script for this film leaked ages ago. It doesn't have any puzzles. It has a scene where shoots a lock and a scene where he crashes his car into a gate and then the key for the lock falls into his lap. This movie is not like the games. At all.

Aesthetics.

The movie unironically would have benefitted from not being called Resident Evil.

Yeah, if you asked me what the Resident Evil aesthetic was, I would probably say "clean" or "professional".
>>
>>222778388
Doesn't RE1, 2 and 3 take place in September?
>>
>>222778965
You need to understand this movie is the least like the games adaptation ever made. It is just completely ignoring the games in every way possible. This is not like the Anderson films where they sat and thought about things like how Umbrella work or what kind of city Raccoon is and how Umbrella could control it. No, this is just a random horror movie with the name Resident Evil.
>>
Erm...CREGGERSE?
>>
>>222777605
>I don't really want to engage with this level of contrarian brainrot, sorry.
well why are you engaging with it then?
>>
>>222776534
It's impossible to translate a video game into an hour and 45 minute movie without losing things and changing the pacing. I saw the interview I think he gets it. I think the monsters could be a little more in-universe however but whatever it'll probably be a flick
>>
>>222779494
>I saw the interview I think he gets it.
he pretty clearly doesn't. I'm sure it'll be a good movie, or at least a fun watch, but it's not gonna be a good adaptation. at best there'll be a few things that kind of line up with the games and a handful of visual nods haphazardly slapped on last minute
>>
>>222777597
The spray is made from the green herbs that grow around raccoon city. Its whybunbrella was founded there.
>>
>>222776534
>the environment changing every seven or eight minutes, like the games. You know, you’re always kind of moving into another level, as it were.
did he only play the Chronicles on-rails shooting games?
>>
>>222779592
The point that the other anon was making is while the older movies (as bad as they are) would have something like that and usually give it a purpose or an in-universe explanation for being there. In this one it's just there for no reason, and it serves no purpose other than to make the audience point and go
>look, look, it's the thing from the video games
We know this is exactly the case too, because they literally said as much in the leaked script.
>>
>>222776534
you're grasping at straws, get a grip OP

Lame. I hope the director is involved in a fatal car accident or something, and this just gets shelved forever.
