>>222781396All four songs used during the Ballroom sequence have lyrics that are directly related to the story, or to broader themes. They are a series of big band songs that were recorded in the 1930s (and are reasonable period choices for a party set c. 1921).The first song, "Masquerade", refers to an evening party where everyone unmasks at midnight. More broadly, masks are used prominently in a deviant sexual context in both Clockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Shut. Here, it is the hotel itself that is masking itself, concealing its true nature from Jack until it kills him (arguably, precisely at midnight)."Midnight, the Stars and You" can be read as the hotel mocking Jack as it claims his soul, especially when reprised at the end. The final two sequences are called "8am" and "4pm". These are eight-hour time jumps over a single calendar day, so that is very reasonable to infer that Jack actually freezes to death and his heart stops right at midnight (the final chase is happening around 10pm or so, takes a while for a body to freeze). Other lyrics also seem (to me) to suggest the Shining ability itself, ability to see past, present and future, all at once."It's All Forgotten Now" plays during the famous Grady scene, and refers to Jack losing his mind as the hotel bewitches him via Grady. The lyrical content of "Home" is about a lover's quarrel, and the peace of domesticity. Jack and Wendy are fighting, and Jack will return "home" to the apartment shortly, even announcing "Wendy, I'm Home."
