Possibly the worst movie ever made
I was really hoping it would be good, I'm a total UFO schizo but this was complete dog shit from start to finish, not a single good moment

Finding out this is some sort of "simulation", the existence of parallel realities, or the confirmation of a supreme being / after life is society breaking.The film to me felt like it is missing a whole layer of exposition that was intentionally left out to avoid creating any legitimate disclosure along those lines. Why did the alien artifact work the way it did, why were the aliens abducting people, why did the secret society have so much power over the military, why did they want aliens to not be revealed, etc. Turned it into another boring spielblerg run from the men in black slop. We got that in a much better form with taken way back in the 00s

The problem is it was done really badly. It was a big mistake making the protagonists chosen ones with superpowers instead of being like Richard Dreyfuss's character who just happens to start tuning in telepathically and it leads him down the rabbit hole with the schizo breakdown and eventual government contact, along with the other various normal people who begin having paranormal experiences/encounters. They could have done that in this movie too, and then lead that to the revelation that some NGO splinter cells are using ayy tech to do bad stuff, or something.

He was lucky with the scripts for The Duellists, Alien, and Blade Runner but most of his later projects have had poor scripts. He was once a talented director for hire, but not really anymore.
