He was "that funny guy down the pub" level funny and didn't mind making fun of himself, being made fun of. He was also introspective and enthusiastic about a wide range of topics, so interesting to listen to. The XFM radio and podcasts are still really good for this reason. Probably the most re-listenable show ever made. Close second is the Adam and Joe radio show. Really, really funny and down to earth while also not completely braindead.

But Ricky always relied on other people. His first attempts at comedy were awful. I still remember seeing him on the 11 O'Clock Show and wondering how the hell he got on TV.
